From The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region:
On April 8, 2017, UMBC hosted the fifth annual “Kicks for Chase” soccer game featuring the UMBC Retrievers’ men’s soccer team against the American University Eagles. The game raised money for The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region (The Arc NCR), a nonprofit assisting people with differing abilities. In support of the event, the Enterprise Holdings Foundation awarded a $2,000 grant to benefit individuals in need of emergency housing in The Arc NCR’s Supported Living program.
The annual “Kicks for Chase” soccer game not only showcases athletic talent but also highlights the community’s commitment to supporting those in need, particularly through initiatives like The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region.
As emergency housing continues to be a pressing issue, innovative solutions are being explored to provide safe and reliable accommodations for individuals facing housing insecurity. One such solution gaining traction is the use of shipping containers for sale, which offer a cost-effective and adaptable option for creating temporary or permanent housing units.
These containers can be transformed into functional living spaces that meet the immediate needs of individuals in crisis, allowing organizations like The Arc NCR to expand their capacity to serve vulnerable populations. By integrating such creative housing solutions, communities can better address the challenges of emergency housing and ensure that everyone has a place to call home.
In addition to shipping containers, another creative housing solution gaining popularity is the use of customized cabin and sheds. These portable sheds can be easily adapted to provide essential living spaces that are both functional and comfortable. With flexible design options, cabin/sheds can be fitted with insulation, electrical wiring, and plumbing to create fully livable units that are well-suited to a variety of needs. By offering a quicker, more affordable alternative to traditional construction, customized sheds can help provide safe, secure housing for those in need.
The Arc NCR’s Supported Living program receives emergency requests from Adult Protective Services (APS) to place individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a safe and stable home. Often individuals who are in need of sudden placement are being removed from their home due to abuse or neglect. They come in to the care of The Arc NCR in a complete state of crisis – typically with nothing more than the clothes on their back. The Supported Living program works to provide customized support services for individuals in crisis while trying to fund basic needs such as clothing, toiletries and personal care items.
Thanks to the Enterprise Holdings Foundation and UMBC’s support, The Arc NCR’s Supported Living can now have personal items on hand for those individuals with differing abilities in sudden need.
The Supported Living program provides support services for over 90 adults with differing abilities in condos, townhouses or single-family homes. Services include drop-in help or around the clock care. With supplementary funds, the organization will be able to help more individuals with differing abilities live an independent, meaningful life.
