Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) has released the 2017 Teacher of the Year application, now available on the school system’s website, www.hcps.org. This year will mark the 23rd anniversary of the HCPS Teacher of the Year program and annual banquet – an event entirely funded by community donations that provides one tangible way of expressing our gratitude to those educators who have been selected by students, colleagues, administrators and the community as the best of the best.
The Harford County community is encouraged to nominate a teacher worthy of this top honor by writing a short essay on the topic: “My candidate should be recognized as the 2017 Harford County Teacher of the Year because…” Those interested in nominating a teacher should visit www.hcps.org and click the banner on the homepage for more information. Nominated teachers have until midnight on Thursday, January 5, 2017, to submit their completed application.
This award is not only an amazing experience for the winning teacher, but for his/her students and the entire school community. In such a challenging time in education and the teaching profession, this award is a gift to a deserving teacher. Just a few of the benefits of being named Teacher of the Year include:

The 2016 Teacher of the Year, Sharalyn Heinly of North Harford Middle School, will pass her title to the 2017 winner on March 15, 2017, when the surprise announcement is made.
Teacher of the year in this school system is nothing more than an ass-kissing award for the sychophant who has an eye on an admin job in a system that treats its teachers like garbage. How many more teachers will leave decrepit HCPS at the end of this school year due to lousy leadership, failure to honor teacher contracts, and ridiculous amounts of paperwork and professional development that takes time away from what teachers should be doing…teaching?
Someone told me the employee (a teacher) has to essentially self nominate themself, and turn in some sort of “packet” which I ASSume contains some paperwork to a committee of some other random people to decide on whether or not they go to the “finals.”
Kind of weird if you ask me.
A teacher has to be nominated by someone other than themselves. it could be a student, a parent, or a colleague. To my knowledge, they can’t nominate themselves. You are correct about the “packet”.

Seems kind of lame to self sponsor an award for yourself. Fart.
I always thought it was random, as in, at the end of the day someone comes in and says Congratulations, youre going to the Bayou in 3 weeks.
The teacher is nominated by someone else, not themselves. The packet they fill out lists their education, experience, etc, sort of like a resume. That is not “sponsoring an award for yourself”.
But feel free to believe whatever makes you experience the most animosity.
Get ready rumor is a big budget shortfall is coming up again. Massive leaving again.
