From Harford Property Services:
After a heartwarming response from students, teachers, and the community, Harford Property Services (HPS) is pleased to announce it is starting the “Create Some Drama” drive to continue the effort to help Harford County students achieve their full potential in their High School Drama
Clubs. The goal of this summer long drive is to bring businesses together to cover all of the drama club participation fees or “Pay to Play” fees charged to students in Harford County.
“In launching the drive, it is our distinct pleasure to announce Fidelity Exterminating in Aberdeen is helping to “Create Some Drama” in Aberdeen by pledging to cover up to 20 students in the Aberdeen High School Drama Club,” said J.D. Russell, President of HPS.
“I spoke with the owner of Fidelity Exterminating, Bernie Cox at an Aberdeen Rotary Club meeting on Monday and told him about the fees. The fees bugged the both of us and Bernie did not bat an eye at helping his alma mater,” said Russell.
Next, HPS is turning its attention to Edgewood High School and will be reaching out to businesses in the Edgewood community. HPS is the community manager of the Woodbridge and Sunrise East Community Associations, managing a total of 1,194 homes between the two homeowner associations in Edgewood.

Nothing but a publicity stunt. Russel does not provide the services people pay him for and now he is going to try and promote himself like this. He is not the professional he says he is.

He does realize the kids in Woodbridge go to Joppatowne?
SAM says
He is running for a political office. Glad the kids are benefiting because if he gets in office the tax payers won’t.
Mls says
Instead of just making bully comments- whatever you think of him-he’s trying to help where our bd of education is lacking. Our drama and arts kids continue to fight this fee as well as support our athletes there should be no pay for
Play – athletes or drama.

There absolutely should be a fee for any extra curricular activity that costs money. Whether it be a field, a theater, a coach, a mentor, supplies, or any other cost. The students and parents of those benefitting should be responsible and not the general population. It is no different than paying for a rev sport or private drama company. If you want to participate l, you need to pay. Stop whining and being entitled. It is not the governments job to provide “free” programs for your child. Free= at the expense of everyone else.

Extracurricular activities are meant to harness and direct the special talents of students attending school. These special talents bring prestige to their associated schools and credentials for the achieving students
Since the schools are in the business to develop the skills and talents of the students attending them, extracurricular activities is only an extension of this effort for students willing to put forth that extra effort to achieve.
Therefore, extracurricular activities are part of what that Board of Education is suppose to be accomplishing, and therefore, there should be no extra charge for students willing and able to participate in these activities.

Wrong on every level. If they happen during that normal school Day and do not add additional costs then there should be no fees. Since they do pay up or move!

Money Tree,
I have to disagree with you. There are many extracurricular activities that more than pay their way. One is the Library Club. These fine folks check books in and out and restock the shelves during their own time at no personal gain.
Another is the Year Book. They pay their way through subscriptions to the year book.
Sports adds much prestige to the school and the students participating.
And last but not least is the Drama Club. They have a very limited budgeted and do wonders with what they have. I know from my own experiences that it is no small feat making cotton broadcloth look like satin brocade. The only thing wrong with drama clubs is they need to emphasize advertising. A heavy hand on ticket buying could actually increase the coffers of the school board like sports does.

Yes, like potential future Olympic swimming silver medalists. 🙂

Because everyone loves to hear their over weight balding neighbor in socks and sandals reliving their high school football season….
