Harford Community College announces the appointment of Dr. Leroy Hamilton, Jr. as the Dean of the Humanities Division. Dr. Hamilton assumed his duties on June 20, 2016. He brings 20 years of higher education experience as a tenured professor of English, an academic dean, an executive director of an academic advising unit for a freshman-year experience initiative, and as a director of a student-services unit. Dr. Hamilton comes to HCC from Wytheville Community College in Virginia, where he served as Dean of Transfer, Business and Social Sciences.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, a Master of Arts degree in Communication/Linguistic Studies, an endorsement in Administration Supervision PreK-12, and a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership. He also holds national certification as an online instructor (COI).
Dr. Hamilton pursued undergraduate study at Norfolk State University (NSU). Four years after graduation in 1996, Dr. Hamilton joined the faculty at his alma mater in the Department of English and Foreign Languages, where he taught freshman composition courses as well as world literature and African American literature. He was among the University’s first online course instructors.
At NSU, Dr. Hamilton served as Executive Director for the Office of First-Year Experience Program and as Director for the Academy for Collegiate Excellence and Student Success. These programs improved performance among freshman students and increased retention and graduation rates.
Dr. Hamilton has also served as a university liaison to the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia and to the Southern Regional Education Board. In this capacity, Dr. Hamilton coordinated the Academic Common Market application process. He is a certified evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and conducts workshops on student success.
He is an experienced grant writer as well as a published author and researcher. Dr. Hamilton has presented at numerous regional, national and international conferences.
Dr. Hamilton holds membership in professional organizations, such as the National Council of Teachers of English, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, Golden Key International Honour Society, Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society, and Who’s Who Among American Teachers. In addition, he is a member of 200+ Men of Hampton Roads, a community service organization, and a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
