The Liriodendron Foundation Gallery is pleased to announce an art exhibit of the works of Bill Shimek . The show will run from Sunday, July 31, 2016 through September 11, 2016. A reception with the artist will be open to the public on Sunday, July 31, 2016 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Gallery hours are Sundays 1:00-4:00 p.m. and Wednesdays 1:00-7:00 p.m.
Paintings and Constructions is an extremely varied show featuring paintings on canvas, drawings, and print as well as painted wood constructions and shadow boxes whose dimensions range from a few inches to ten feet tall. Colors range from muted monochrome to energetically vibrant and compositions range from photo-real to cartoonish. The breadth and scope of Shimek’s work have invited descriptions that include: “eye popping” and “pure fun” to “sensitively composed” and “intricate beauty.”
“I graduated from Bel Air High School in 1965. One of the things I feel most fortunate for is that I got to play football with Al Cesky,” shared Shimek. He continued, “It is liberating to discover new ways to make things, new variations of what I’ve done before, things that may have never existed. It gives me energy to find a way to do something unique and striking while still visually appealing. Being self-taught I get to find my own way. I never learned the rules and never learned how hard it is.”
Shimek’s work had been shown by numerous galleries and museums including The Hunter Museum in Chattanooga, the American Visionary Museum in Baltimore, and in New York.
Paintings and Constructions will include many local scenes including Deer Creek Valley landscapes, local bars and diners. One of his favorites is a 1986 drawing of a scene inside Panos Bar and Grill on Main Street, Bel Air.
