From Maryland State Police:
Maryland State Police are continuing their investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision on southbound Mountain Road (MD Rt. 152) just south of Bel Air Road (US Route 1) in Fallston.
A 17-year-old male from Baldwin, MD was the operator of a 2015 Ford F-250, which was traveling northbound Mountain Road approaching Bel Air Road. For unknown reasons, the F-250 crossed over a solid double yellow line into the southbound lane and collided with a 2013 Ford E-350 box truck just before 4:15 pm. The operator of the box truck, identified as 57-year-old Conrad Giovanni Gilbert of Essex, MD, was pronounced dead at the scene. The operator of the F-250 was transported by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital.
Southbound Mountain Road just south of Bel Air Road was closed for approximately 3 hours for Troopers to conduct their investigation. Further investigation is continuing at this time. No charges have been filed at this time.
If anyone witnessed this collision, please e-mail the lead investigator at Joseph.Twardowski@maryland.gov

I was driving by immediately after this tragedy occured. No rescue vehicles had even arrived. The 17 year old was laying on his back on the median strip. He had some blood on his face but, he was conscious. Both vehicles involved were not in the middle of the road. They were very close, if not on, the shoulder. From my field of vision, it appeared that the pick up truck hit the box truck at an angle. As in the pick up slammed directly into the driver side door, probably smashing the skull of Mr. Gilbert, killing him instantly. It’s very hard to understand how this happened. There’s a lot of traffic at approximately 4:15 at the Route 1 and Route 152 intersection. It’s virtually impossible to drive at a high fate of speed. There were a few men that had stopped, appeared to be assessing the situation, and I imagine called 911. May God bless the soul of Conrad Giovanni Gilbert. I pray for his family, that they may find solace after suffering and grieving his sudden unexpected departure from their lives. At this point, we do not know what caused the 17 year old from Baldwin to cross a solid double yellow line with enough force to take another human’s life. There is certainly the possibilty of a medical emergency. Finally, I would like to let our first rsponders know; ambulance, fire personnel, and police officers how grateful I am that they have the skills, the professionalism, and the intestinal fortitude to investigate such horrendous circumstances. When you or a loved one leave your home, always let them know you love them and how important they are to your life.
K says
Today, as I drove by yesterday’s horrific scene, a thought crossed my mind. The center lane before you get to the median strip is for making a left or right hand turn, depending in which direction you’re traveling. Is it possible the 17 year old was making a left hand turn into the driveway of one of the houses along Route 152? Maybe the dearly departed hit the pick up truck. I don’t think that’s what happened. Again, based on the crime scene, the pick up truck appeared to be slammed into the driver side door of the box top truck. There are two humans that know for sure what happened. Unfortunately, one is unable to tell his story. I just feel bad making assumptions, placing blame, playing judge, jury, and executioner before the truth and facts are made public. Today, I also saw in the center turning lane, right before the median strip, a big black set of tire skid marks, as in someone attempting to make a u turn in a big hurry while traveling too fast to safely and successfully complete the action. The 17 year old may have tried this stunt with Mr. Gilbert’s vehicle too close.
Hate_Assumptions says
Honestly, K, for you to assume what happened and offer your personal “investigation” into the issue is somewhat distasteful. I am sure that the family thanks you for your prayers for the loss of life, and further thanks you for the vivid images you mention of their loved one having their skull crushed by an oncoming vehicle.
You state, “I just feel bad making assumptions, placing blame, playing judge, jury, and executioner before the truth and facts are made public.” If you feel bad, then you shouldn’t be doing it.
You state, “There were a few men that had stopped, appeared to be assessing the situation, and I imagine called 911”. You imagine? Did it, ever once, dawn on you to call 9-1-1 yourself to report the emergency? You obviously slowed to a crawl to have enough time to view the wreckage to be able to describe in such detail.
Perhaps stay on scene and appear as a witness the event that you profess to know so much about? No, you had to rush home and get on social media to tell everyone that you saw it before everyone else, and make assumptions that quite possibly are false.
As you mentioned, you happened to be driving by before any emergency vehicles were on site. I can only assume, given your testimony above, that you gawked and quite possibly snapped a few photos on your smartphone to share on Facebook so that you can share how “compassionate” you are, and quite possibly get a few minutes of fame and the most likes that day.
As for the skid marks, stop with the assumptions. As you stated, there are many cars that travel that road daily. It could have been from one of them, at another time, not necessarily related to this horrific accident.
K says
Wow….,you are a very angry soul. I must tell you, since you own a defective crystal ball, that is inaccurately detailing my existence and where abouts, where I’m travelling around 4:15 p.m. etcetera, that EVERY single nasty comment you stated about me personally, are wrong. It’s okay, I forgive folks like you that sometimes lose sight of the tragic article topic. I’ve been the recipient of a negligent car driver whose inattention to the road almost cost me my life. Mr. Gilbert had no choice in the matter. That’s the most important part of this story..
K says
As I reread your diatribe, I’ll give you a few specifics that an asshole like your self hasn’t a clue. I don’t own a smartphone. I don’t participate with social media sites, as in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etcetera. I wrote my original comment at 10:59 p.m.. I didn’t know Mr. Gilbert had passed away when I drove past the wreck. There were already four cars stopped on 152. When I wrote my first post, it was over six hours after i passed by the scene on my way to work. By the way, I paid my respects to one of our awesome Customs and Border Security officers whose path I happened to cross yesterday in Laredo, Texas. I let him know how sorry I was to just learn of the shootings and deaths of his brothers in law enforcement in Baton Rouge. This man was so very appreciative of a simple kind gesture of acknowledgement of his life’s work. I’m going to make a really big assumption that you, Hate Assumptions, have an agenda when it comes to the horrible event on July 13th. Keep on spewing nonsense. One day it will eat you alive from the inside out. When the mean folks start their innane, hate filled reponses, then it’s time to stop reading other unrelated posts. So, adios mi loco hombre.
Hate_Assumptions says
An angry soul? No, but resorting to name-calling and cursing speaks volumes to your character. You see, you simply got called out for making assumptions about things that you have no idea about. Because of this, you took offense, and resorted to Elementary School tactics in an effort to save face.
Not following? Here, since I know that sometimes the plain truth hurts worse than your own narrative.
You state that I “inaccurately detailed your existence and whereabouts”. False. Your very first sentence told us exactly where you were, “I was driving by immediately after this tragedy occured”. Maybe you got your crystal ball from the same factory I did?
You state “EVERY single nasty comment you stated about me personally, was wrong.” Was it personal? Funny how that happens. You mean personal, like you when you offered your opinion on how one of the victims perished? Perhaps you meant “personal attacks” like when you called me an asshole? Sir / Madam, resorting to cursing is a sure sign that you have lost, and are admitting to lose, any argument.
When you replied that something would “eat me alive from the inside out”, I can see that you are speaking from personal experience. The fact that you posted a reply 3 days after my comment, and then found it necessary to come back nearly an hour later, and dribble on further, only fuels the speculation that my take on you and your assessment of the scene is “eating away at you from the inside out”. Perhaps it was “eating away at you” not to continue to share your take on what transpired when you lifted us with your second comment a day later.
Since you are offering forgiveness, I will reciprocate and offer forgiveness for stating that I lost “sight of the tragic article topic”. Nothing could be further from the truth, Mr. / Mrs. K. What you don’t know is that I have more than 20 years as a Maryland State Trooper investigating accidents, similar to this one, on a weekly basis. Many involve severe injury or death. But hey, you have been in an accident – and you passed this scene – so that makes you an expert, right?
In all of your comments, you have still failed to answer my basic question of why didn’t you call 9-1-1 yourself? You professed to being at the scene prior to emergency services. In your 4th comment, you seemed to offer a limited answer in that you didn’t call because “I didn’t know Mr. Gilbert had passed away when I drove past the wreck.” Really? So, in your expert experience, someone needs to be dead in order for you to call 9-1-1 and seek help? I had no idea that 9-1-1 could not be used for all emergencies.
Why bother to mention that you had no idea the victim had passed at that moment? Funny that you didn’t seem to have an issue , in your original comment, describing in detail the possible cause of his death. You opined that a vehicle had struck another in such a manner that it led to “smashing the skull of Mr. Gilbert, killing him instantly.” Still didn’t feel the need to call 9-1-1? After driving slowly by, memorizing enough details to painstakingly recreate them here for us all several hours later. Slow enough to notice 4 other cars were stopped, the blood on the face of a victim, and the angle of impact. Yet, not enough thought to call emergency services. Oh wait, that’s right, you assumed that someone else had done that when you “imagined” that bystanders called 9-1-1.
The one thing you have right, is that I am angry. I am angry at the hate and racial divide in the country. I get angry when fellow law enforcement officers are killed. I am angry about innocent civilians being killed. I am angry that communities choose to point fingers instead of cleaning their own houses.
I am angry that people believe they know our job better.
I laugh, however, when someone attempts to redirect an argument and congratulate themselves for thanking a cop. that’s what it was, correct? A self-congratulatory statement when you tooted your own horn about supporting law enforcement, one that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.
As a matter of fact, I do have an agenda for the events on that day. I have an agenda for the preceding, and follow-on events as well. Those are personal opinions, and really don’t belong shared in this setting. Why? Because they are opinion and not fact.
Ahhh, facts…those pesky things.
I do, however, congratulate you on your use of multiculturalism in this post. Boasting that you are multi-lingual is a huge deal! You must be super proud of yourself for that one! Kudo’s to you and your fancy, city-folk education.
Cabron, tu hermano no tiene la ingle. Besa mi culo, puto. Jode tu madre ayer noche.
Oops, looks like someone else read a book, too.

Hate Assumptions, why don’t you give us your name, rank, and badge number. Anyone that is so angry because I can’t afford a cell phone and was unable to call 9-1-1, is unfit to protect and serve the public. I know way too many kind, civil, and nonjudgemental law enforcement officials. You sir and/or madame are not a Maryland State Trooper. The standards are too high to allow the vindictive, vicious, unstable likes of an ASSHOLE such as you to be admitted, let alone graduate from the academy. You have spent an inordinate amount of time failing miserably to attempt to rebuke everything I’ve discussed. You scare me. And yeah, my master’s degree from Harvard University does not preclude my use of words that best describe someone like you. Law enforcement is not my profession like you, as you claim. I’m just someone who tries to help those folks that need a hand up. Save your energy to really promote the safety and well being of your community, rather than anonymously writing essays belittling and berating my existence.

“When the mean folks start their innane, hate filled reponses, then it’s time to stop reading other unrelated posts.”
-So much for your “reponse” stating that you are signing off, Mr. Harvard Grad…LOL
“why don’t you give us your name, rank, and badge number”
Name: Hate_Assumptions
Rank: Sergeant
Badge Number: LOL
“Anyone that is so angry because I can’t afford a cell phone and was unable to call 9-1-1, is unfit to protect and serve the public.”
-Sir / Madam, I am not angry that you don’t own a cell-phone. Nor am I angry that you failed to alert emergency services during an accident. In fact, you never stated that you “couldn’t affort a cell phone” you merely mentioned that you did not have a smart-phone. Either way, my anger is at the fact that you can roll slowly by scenes like this, gawk, and make assumptions based on an investigation where your ‘expertise’ was gained from television shows, and nothing to do with actual accident investigation. You feel free to post the graphic manner in which, you believe, one of the victims may have died; yet lambaste those who choose to point out your errors. I guess in your Ivy League education at Harvard, nobody ever told you that you were wrong, and that to assume anything is making an ASS out of U and ME.
“The standards are too high to allow the vindictive, vicious, unstable likes of an ASSHOLE such as you to be admitted, let alone graduate from the academy.”
-Funny you speak of high standards, your numerous spelling and grammatical errors must have gotten past the high-standards at Harvard. Nowhere, in any of my replies to you, have I resorted to personal, name-calling attacks. Yet, for the second time, you feel so vindicated in calling people you have never met names and deflecting from the original issue, that I will just let it be. No use in arguing with Ivy League types, you are obviously on a higher social tier than the rest of us peons who work hard enough to actually stop and help people instead of making baseless proclamations that you “help those folks that need a hand up”.
Well, Mr. Harvard K…do you think that the kid lying in the median after the accident could have used a “hand up”? Do you think that the driver could have used a “hand up”?
“You have spent an inordinate amount of time failing miserably to attempt to rebuke everything I’ve discussed.”
-Nothing has failed in any attempt, it was not a test. It was simply educated replies to what started as assumptions and useless, non-factual information based on “eyewitness testimony”, which turned to name-calling on your part. In any argument, the party that lends itself to cursing and name-calling are usually the ones who have nothing to offer in the form of a reply. Since you seem to have a fondness for calling me an a**hole, I guess the glove fits in your case.
The real amusement is that people like you cannot stand being wrong, or being called out for being what you are…a know-it-all. You believe yourself to be the upper crust and have inside information into everything, that you cannot wait to share it with the public to show your prestige to everyone. How did that work out for you this time? Hell, my theory (yes, my simple Masters Degree from Johns Hopkins allows me to use words like that), was proven in each of your replies. The fact that you just couldn’t stand not having the last word is good enough to impress upon anyone of what an upper-crust snob you pretend to be. Then again, the upper-crust have cell-phones, so…
“You scare me”
-Boo.
“Law enforcement is not my profession like you”
-Then you should steer clear of making assumptions about what happened in cases like this if you want to avoid discussions like this.
“Save your energy to really promote the safety and well being of your community”
-Over 70 hours a week, I do just that.
“rather than anonymously writing essays belittling and berating my existence.”
-Calling someone out for anonymity? LOL, sur thing, “K”. Yeah, my last reply may have been a little belittling, but you had it coming.

Kids should not be given the keys to a tank. May this poor man rest in peace and this juvenile not forget what can result from incivil driving habits. We need more cops out there ticketing people for aggressive driving – tailgating, speeding, cutting people off, texting, even just not minding the wheel.
Hazzard County Liars says
A lot of people wreck on my property, one about every 2/3 months, more frequently in inclement weather because too many people drive around in bald tires, too fast for conditions and cell phones.
It’s been my personal exerience that over 90% of the people I make contact with after damaging their car lie about why/how they wrecked where they did.
I’d say over 50% of them are cell phone use in non inclement weather judging by where I see their phone immediately after their negligence.
Learn2drive says
I don’t buy into the definition of “accident” anymore. Other than a deer strike and even then caution ought to nearly eliminate risk, nearly 100% of vehicle collisions could be avoided by paying attention, obeying posted speeds and staying off phone. Fines need to be tripled for aggressive driving and cell phone use. If a 17 year old can afford a new Ford F-250, then he can afford an $800 fine. Got it parents – arming your kid with a tank because you want them kept safe doesn’t help the rest of us.
Yup says
Exactly. With the exception of a few scenarios, “accident” is a total misnomer. Just a feel good term for people to hear and use in these situations. It’s an accident because you didn’t mean to do anything wrong, it just happened. BS! These crashes are due to someone’s negligence behind the wheel.

Much to my amazement she successfully completed this maneuver and headed out of the lot into traffic.

Poisoned says
I concur with Open Your Eyes. Too many people behind the wheel not paying attention to the road, not obeying the speed limited and focused on too many electronic devices. We may never know what caused this tragedy on Mountain Rd., but this I am certain of: Today’s society is poisoned by people who cannot live their own lives and function normally on a daily basis due to their infatuation with a cell phone… much less are these people able to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner. Lives of others are being put at risk. Today’s automobiles are entertainment centers on wheels. I work near the intersection of Rt. 1 and Mountain Rd. I have seen the aftermath of too many accidents, I witness drivers (many distracted) exceeding the speed limit and trying to maneuver turns where posted signs clearly state otherwise. I pray that the senseless killing stops. I pray for the well being of the 17 year old involved. May God bless Conrad Gilbert, his family and loved ones.
Grumpy Harford Resident says
I saw a presumably younger under 20 year old driver with a wrecked up front end on a 4 door passenger car in the area of Route 7 and Abingdon Road a few months ago.
The kid just stood there, leaning against the wrecked up front end with a “I just smoked a big fat Sophie” look, eyes wide open, mouth open, starring at a fixed point in the middle of Route 7.
It appeared to me that he was at fault as there was another person taking pictures of the damage to the other car, and the “young person’s” car at the same time.
I laughed hard and ignorantly yelled “Enjoy your insurance rate hike, you idiot” as loud as I possibly could.
Grumpy Harford Resident says
Sophie, damn auto correct. That’s “Doobie”
Grumpy Harford Resident says
I guess you’re wondering how I know what a “smoked a big far Doobie” look is.
I’ve worked in auto repair industry 10 years ago and a fellow co worker would “smoke a bowl” by the dumpster and proceed to fix someone’s car, with very much the same look.
He got fired when he blew someone’s engine on a test drive. He was draining the oil on a tire job and told me to “watch this” as he proceeded to rev the engine without any lube oil in it.

Learn2drive says
A little late to treat this young man as if his feelings might get hurt. He deserves no protection. Short of having had a heart attack, which is highly unlikely in a 17 year old, this young man crossed the double yellow line near a busy intersection during a period of the day when you can expect lots of traffic. His inattention in his enormous new truck killed an innocent person. He needs to think about that for a very long time.
RU Kidding says
I’m not asking to spare his feelings. And I’m sure he will be thinking about this for the rest of his life, as will both families.

So that is your only recourse for forgiveness, a heart attack?
How about you just do what any other civilized person ‘should’ do, and wait for facts to come out.
Learn2drive says
There are degrees of negligence that approach near levels of deliberateness and the law recognizes that. This is pretty cut and dry when no one disputes the truck crossed the double yellow…again when the time of day, location and conditions would suggest an even higher level of attentiveness. This isn’t a fender bender – the kid killed somebody. I know this county
has a history of leniency when it comes to aggressive driving. Heck you can run over a guy, stop long enough to clear the debris away from your jeep and speed off and it’s a big ho hum.
