From Maryland State Police:
A marshy area on the east side of the Bush River became the unintended camping site of a stranded jet ski rider beginning the afternoon of June 5, 2016 until the victim was located by a State Police helicopter aircrew and rescued by allied agencies on the morning June 6, 2016.
A concerned spouse alerted officials in Harford County at 5:15 a.m. Monday that her husband had departed from a boat ramp in the Bush River Sunday afternoon and had not returned home. Maryland Natural Resources Police located the victim’s truck and jet ski trailer in the parking lot of Flying Point Park. An overwater search coordinated by Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capitol Region and supported by the Trooper 1 helicopter crew and vessels from the Coast Guard, Maryland Natural Resources Police and Aberdeen Proving Grounds Police Department commenced.
At about 8:30 a.m. on June 6th, the victim was located by the State Police helicopter crew and was subsequently rescued by responding public safety vessels. The victim was not injured, but fatigued after weathering the thunderstorms and rain that passed through Harford County Sunday evening. The jet ski he was riding suffered mechanical failure which stranded him thru the night.
As this summer’s boating season starts to ramp up, the Coast Guard stresses the importance of preparedness, which directly applied to this case. During the debrief, the survivor said if he would have checked the weather, had a reliable means of communication, or told someone where he was, he would have prevented the situation entirely, or have been found much sooner.
As summer kicks into high gear and the waterways fill with boaters and jet ski enthusiasts, it’s a prime time to enjoy the thrill of riding the waves. But as this incident highlights, even the most enjoyable outings can take an unexpected turn when mechanical issues arise. Regular maintenance and proper preparation are essential to avoid being stranded and to ensure your jet ski is as reliable as it is fun. Mechanical failure, like the one in this case, can be prevented with routine checks and servicing, giving you peace of mind as you hit the water.
That’s where The Jet Ski Doctor comes in. Specializing in full-service jet ski repair, their team ensures your watercraft is always in peak condition. Whether it’s a minor tune-up or addressing major mechanical issues, they’ve got the expertise to get you back on the water safely and efficiently. Trusting professionals for maintenance not only enhances your experience but could also prevent situations like this from happening, keeping your summer adventures stress-free and unforgettable.
The Maryland State Police Aviation Command operates a fleet of 10, Augusta-Westland AW139, helicopters based out of seven sections throughout the state. This mission is a clear demonstration of the multi-mission capability these aircraft provide to our allied public safety partners and the citizens of Maryland. The partnership with Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capitol Region and the Maryland National Resources Police protects citizens on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

Who picks up the tab for that?
Doh says
We do, of course!
Scum says
This is something we pay taxes for. This is a public service. This is akin to police and fire departments; i.e., emergency services.
Please tell us Mr. Tea Party, what is your solution?
Democrat Voter in North Harford says
Probably like most other far right nut jobs.
The yearning desire to holster up a big handgun and go intimidate minorities.
Homer Lunchpail says
Beats the crap out of your suggestion to pass a law that states:
Before heading out on jetski, you must have a working cell phone and check the weather forecast or be subjected to a fine to be enforced by the police department.

@DVNH
Why don’t you stop your contnuous race baiting sweet heart. Why don’t you offer explanations and solutions for black folks WITH GUNS killing each other at such alarming rates. Oh that’s right it is not politically correct to hold black people accountable for anything theses days. Curious to see how you will blame Whitey for this one.
North Harford Democrat says
Race baiting? Middle aged conservative male innuendo’s.
Typical scared of your own shadow Tea bagger
Give me a break says
Really didn’t expect an informative response to my query. Just keep blaming Whitey while the urban genocide continues. Re beer Sweety if you are not part of tha the solution you are part of the problem.
North Harford Democrat says
Blame whitey? Where did I type that? And you’re calling me out for racism? Pal, I check “Caucasian/white” on ethnicity forms. You’re the one who “put words in my mouth” like a typical lying tea bagger.
White folks don’t kill white folks at alarming rates?
I guess you’re referring to the Baltimore City homicide count.
I have no solution to stop urban and poverty stricken criminals with the ill intent of being unethical in their life and commit violent crimes against others.
That’s not me, I’m not doing that. I work and pay taxes just like you (hopefully)
Give me a break says
No I call you out for race baiting. The world has enough problems with out pontificating big mouth tools like yourself fueling fires. Your innuendos speak volumes. White, black, green, I perceive you on the same race baiting level as the likes of Al Sharpton. You are clearly part of the problem.
North Harford Democrat says
Nah, you’re the race baiter with the “blame whitey” and your xenophobic accusations.
Give me a break says
Let me get this straight. Right wing nut intimidating minorities. I guess there are no implied innuendos in that. You are a race bating tool. By the way. Would you be posting under the name of NHD when you actually live with your mother on Patapsco Ave?
North Harford Democrat says
I never said it wasn’t an innuendo.
Where did I proclaim it wasn’t?
Look at all the second Amendment rallies, “it’s my constitutional right to carry a handgun”
Not in this state. I wouldn’t want these people who are yearning to carry a big gun a shall issue carry permit
Huh says
APG security didn’t detect him trespassing. My that’s reassuring.
Harford Resident says
So a huge storm is coming, and this guy goes out on a jet ski. I can’t imagine he’s a rocket scientist or anything like that.
Reasonable_Guy says
This could have ended tragically like the guy on his boat with his family this weekend…. jumped in to retrieve his hat and never came up. I for one am glad this guy was found alive and uninjured. Jet ski’s have to have a boat registration, so technically he is paying a special boating tax that should cover the rescue costs.
North Harford Democrat says
Seriously though, this guy called me a “big mouth tool” and I have no personal insults to him at all.
Typical.”Strong words” and personal insults.
Hank says
Well the comments here went downhill quickly…
Anyway, kudos to DFC Phipps who stuck with trying to locate this guy and called for additional resources to conduct the search including the Coast Guard (who initially said they weren’t coming out), aviation, DNR, etc.
