Former EPA Scientist, Environmental Writer Discuss their Book about EPA at Abingdon Library

From the Harford County Public Library:

“Over the Fence: Talking with E.G. Vallianatos and McKay Jenkins” takes place Sunday, February 21, at 2 p.m. at the Abingdon Library.

Vallianatos, a former EPA scientist, and Jenkins, an environmental writer who was literally poisoned by his own environment, will discuss their book, “Poison Spring: The Secret History of Pollution and the EPA.” Bob Mumby, host of “The Harford Edge,” on WAMD, will moderate the discussion.

With GMOs and fracking in the news, this program on the environment and the government agency tasked with protecting it provides a timely discussion topic.

“Over the Fence: Talking with E.G. Vallianatos and McKay Jenkins” is the first of a new series of discussions at the library featuring books, authors and speakers on timely topics that affect Harford County and its residents. This first topic was selected to reflect the theme and programming offered through Peanuts…Naturally, an exhibition of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts’ comic strips, videos, objects and interactive stations that focus on exploration of the natural world.

Charlie Brown and the EPA, part of the Peanuts…Naturally exhibition, features items that deal specifically with Charles Schulz’s EPA/Johnny Horizon involvement and a series of comic strips where Charlie Brown gets in trouble with the EPA. It is on display at the Abingdon Library through April 24.

Also on view is a 1978 “Peanuts” animation special, “Charlie Brown Clears the Air.” The film was produced by Schulz in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency and the American Lung Association and focuses on air pollution dangers associated with burning leaves, motor vehicle emissions and other pollutants.

The main portion of Peanuts…Naturally, including comic strips and interactive activities featuring Schulz’s affection for birds and gardening, is on display at the Be Air Library through April 24.
