From Harford Campaign for Liberty:
Dear Friend,
We are happy to announce that 32 Maryland Delegates took a strong stance against ‘taxation by citation’ and co-sponsored HB 436, the Bill to REPEAL the use of speed and red light cameras in all of Maryland.
But one of our very own Republican Delegates was missing from this important bill.
Delegate Kathy Szeliga, our representative for Harford’s District 7, did not sign on as a co-sponsor for this legislation.
No doubt she received calls and emails from constituents asking for her to support the bill. Was she just busy running for Barbara Mikulski’s Senate seat?
Or does she favor these camera programs, which are rife with errors, fraudulent activity and infringements on our liberty?
Folks, if we want HB 436 to get to the Annapolis Floor for debate this session, we need ALL hands on deck. And that includes those elected officials who campaigned on a platform of conservative, limited government values.
But it’s not too late for Del Szeliga to get involved in this important fight. In fact, although our District 7 Representative failed to co-sponsor the bill, she sits on the committee that will decide if this bill reaches the floor or gets quietly killed by the liberal agenda.
It is crucial that Del Szeliga be present when the committee holds their hearing on HB 436, and votes to move it forward to the floor. With a floor vote, you and I can see who’s holding up to their campaign promises.
If you’re tired of politicians using schemes like red light cameras to grab more money from you and your family’s pockets, I need you to do one simple thing.
Please take a moment from your busy day to call and email Kathy Szeliga and ask for her pledge to support HB 436 in committee.

After all, wasn’t this her promise to the District 7 voters – to lower taxes and fees, and cut red tape in our state government?
The Hearing on HB 436 is only a few short days away.
Please don’t wait – contact Kathy and tell her you won’t be satisfied with anything less than a full repeal of the use of speed and red light cameras.

While you’re at it, get rid of that mandatory headlight zone on the Route 1 bypass; just another excuse to wring a few more dollars out of the locals.
Mr. Moderate says
It’s not just Szeliga, the entire Assembly is riddled with these pro-Reds. We need to organize a committee to root out these traitors! Unfortunately, I understand Senator McCarthy is no longer available to lead the investigation.

Wouldn’t be easier to just stop for a red light?
SP says
There is plenty of data about communities shortening yellow lights below legal minimums to cause more people to go through red lights with camera’s. There are also areas where rear end collisions have increased dramatically because people slam on the brakes to avoid a red light ticket.
Do you trust Maryland to be always honest and above board?
I recall Baltimore County having to refund several hundred thousand dollars to speed camera ticket recipients. The law states that each ticket had to be verified by a sworn law enforcement officer. The officer whose name was auto-signed on tickets died in a car crash months before.
Sorry, my trust of those who can use technology to separate me from my money for the gain of their department is very low. Getting a ticket for being pulled over by a live police officer who witness first hand my infraction is a truly different story. I can accept the ticket, plead my case on the side of the road or plead my case in court. Doing so against a camera is difficult, although not impossible. I fought a red light ticket in DC successfully. The car ahead of me slowed down just before the light turned yellow, giving me no chance to slow enough or go through the green/yellow light. Video proved it out.
HYDESMANN says
Everyone knows these speed and red light cameras are a money making scam and thanks for fighting it Del. Szeliga. Now if the voters would wake up and vote most of the Dems , especially Miller and Busch, out of office we may be able to raise Md out this la-la land we live in.
Citizen says
How about we just obey the law and stop when we are supposed to.
I need to know says
What happens when someone ‘photoshops’ your license plate and blows through tolls/speed cameras constantly?
They mail the ticket regardless if the vehicle pictured doesn’t match up.
Of course you won’t have to pay but you still have to (probably) spend minutes (maybe hours) on the phone “straightening” out something that shouldnt have even been sent to you in the first place?
StantheMan says
No one wants to pay any taxes, if you’re a politician and you even dream of the word tax you’re probably going to have a hard time. So revenue is going to go down – which leads us to other ways of bringing in money to keep Maryland from turning into a cesspool, like the states that throw out tax cuts year after year after year. Look at Louisiana – after years of Jindal doing the GOP shuffle, they’re in dire straits. Like it or not, it takes money to run a state and all of the things you like – police officers, public libraries, schools, roads, construction, etc – if we want to fund them you can’t slash income tax for everyone and not have something like red light cameras to try and fill the revenue gap. Alternatively, we could quit letting the rich get away with a million tax loopholes and maybe kick in their fair share – but nah, that’s crazy talk.
Arturro Nasney says
If you really want to stop people from running red lights install the tire slashing teeth like at car rentals. You only need to replace one set of tires to get the message. Of course the goal is not to stop folk from running red lights, it’s to raise revenue.
