BRAC Is Coming: Are We Ready?
Discussion about regional preparations for the next round of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) actions will be the topic of the upcoming Army Alliance Breakfast on Thursday, December 3, 2015, from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the Richlin Ballroom, Edgewood, MD.
Guest Speaker: Barry P. Steinberg is a partner in Kutak Rock’s Washington office.
Beginning in 1991, Mr. Steinberg has represented over 25 communities in the four latest rounds of base closure (1991, 1993, and 2005). In several of these engagements, his representation involved as many as 11 military bases within the clients’ sphere of concern. He continues to assist communities in their efforts to ensure that the military value of their facilities and installations is enhanced and protected. At the time of his retirement from active duty in the Army, Mr. Steinberg held the rank of colonel in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps and served as Chief of the Army’s Environmental Law Division in the Pentagon.
Harford Resident says
Huntsville is who/what we have to worry about.
Sam Adams says
Lifelong county resident here that can’t wait for APG to be shuddered. The sooner that happens the faster we can create real jobs developing waterfront properties, reduce crime in the route 40 corridor and build a diverse local economy.
Harford Resident says
What is the relationship between APG and crime in the route 40 corridor?
Question, I will answer says
I’d guess not much, but there has been a few articles late of employees there involved in big theft.
I’d also assume that some BRAC people actually moved to the Route 40 area, and that hundreds of people, some aren’t the greatest people (or their kids) alive.
I’d take a guess most of our Route 40 creepers have been around well before BRAC.
MAYBE ask a Route 40 school teacher the census designation of where a student who threw a chair at them came from, for example.
On the mark says
That all sounds great, but do you think that land can be used for residential use after all that has been done out there. I’m all for reclaiming that land for waterfront properties, if it can be decontaminated and all the exploded ordinances removed.
SoulCrusher says
Not to mention whatever they have buried there over the years. APG has been in operation for a very long time and I’m sure that there is few environmental hazard to deal with there. Things that have occurred that have absolutely no record of actually happening….
Kharn says
“Developing waterfront properties” only gives you jobs for a few years until all the lots are built. The 20,000 employees drawing billions of dollars per year in salaries from APG are a much more valuable contribution to our community, those employees and their families go out to eat at Bonefish, shop at Target, buy a car from Jones, etc, putting a far larger sum of money into Harford’s economy than a few hundred waterfront estates would support.
Where would those estate holders work, and what would happen with the thousands of empty houses that would sit on the market as the workforce follows the Army elsewhere?
L says
Harford County would be an absolute SHITHOLE without APG.
Tim says
So what do you mean by “real jobs” hmmm? There’s nothing keeping the rest of a “diverse” as you say commercial industry from moving into this area; particular with any kind of connections you seem to be fixated on APG. BTW, a majority of companies are here due to APG, particularly contractors in case you haven’t noticed. And on the contrary, if it wasn’t for the APG revenue generating jobs for the local economy, the crime rates would be much higher. No jobs=high crime. Back in Monmouth county, NJ near Ft. Monmouth, there has been a higher crime rate since they closed Ft. Monmouth and the local economy is hurting.
Or maybe perhaps you were one of those who tried to gouge NJ residents on the overpriced value of your home you tried to sell during the 2005 BRAC years that just didn’t sell so you have sour grapes with APG now. Sorry, we weren’t that dumb or desperate to overpay for your homes. If you want more money, go get a second job.

APG AND EDGEWOOD AREA HAVE BEEN THE LARGEST EMPLOYER IN THIS COUNTY FOR A LONG TIME. THESE JOBS BRING MORE TO OUR TAX BASE THAN A DEVELOPMENT.
BRAC DID NOT BECOME WHAT OUR POLITICIANS EXPECTED. A NUMBER OF NEW JERSEY EMPLOYEES COMMUTE BY BUS SINCE FAMILY IS ALL IN NEW JERSEY. SOME HAD HOPED THAT IN TIME THEY COULD FIND AN OPENING AT THE NEW VA FACILITY THAT OPENED NEAR MONMOUTH. THIS IS THE SAME A NUMBER OF APG EMPLOYEES DID MANY YEARS AGO WHEN A SECTION WAS TRANSFERRED TO VIRGINIA. THEY TOOK THE MARC TRAIN BECAUSE THEY WERE CLOSE TO RETIREMENT OR WANTED TO KEEP A GOVERNMENT JOB IN HOPES SOMETHING WOULD OPEN AND THEY COULD TRANSFER BACK TO APG.
OUR TAX DOLLARS DO NOT NEED TO BE USED TO SUBSIDIZE ANOTHER DEVELOPER LIKE CLARK TURNER WHO IS NOT IN BANKRUPTCY. WILL THE COUNTY EVER GET BACK THAT SUBSIDITY?
Nope says
Aberdeen/edgewood can never be closed and developed. The government knows some of what is in the ground but it’s what is buried there they don’t know will always keep it a toxic waste zone. They crop dusted flocks of animals on the bay shore in the 50’s just to see how effectively they could kill. Ever wonder why some of the best cancer hospitals are in MD? Yea because the incidents here are above normal, thank you Edgewood arsenal. Anyone who goes near the waters or god forbid eats anything out of the water of the northern bay should have their head examined.
They may move the people out but the base will remain.
He who is says
Why would I need my head examined if I eat a Rockfish out of the Bush River? You think they are more to cause future illness than somewhere else? Marylands .gov technology corridor, .gov and .gov contractors has broought out some of the best hospitals around. No different than a state like California except Maryland is a real small state with a lot of population per mile in the “metro” area’s as compared to other states.
Most of Bush River is not developed, natural as compared to other parts of the country’s watershed that has much more chemical shoreline runoff.
Please cite statistics to tell me how unsafe is or keep humping your bible as you stroke the barrel of your firearm with a piece of tinfoil.
SoulCrusher says
I must admit, I like the “humping your bible as you stroke the barrel of your firearm with a piece of tinfoil.” comment. I’ll have to remember that one…..
Nope says
I suspect you have already consumed too much of the cancer carrying fish of the Bush river.
Enjoy your chemo…… Bald may be a good look for you.

Everyday I’m on the road (Route 40), east bound at 0400hours, and everyday a cluster of peter puffers (even at that time of morning) come hauling ass down the road behind me.
I’ve been counting cars, and a little over 1/3 make a right hand turn on Spesutia road. Bunch of assholes working at the warehouses I presume.
It’s funny, I always wish there was a cop around. They will pass me in the left lane doing 65-75MPH and eventually, I roll up behind them sitting at a traffic light.
Just someone today ran the dog shit out of their car to pass me, and then get in the turn lane for Spesutia Road that was no further ahead than 600 feet. I literally passed them as they were slowing back down to turn. In a hurry you sock cucker to go nowhere?
Tim says
There are a lot of moronic drivers here. A lot of fat, overweight tubbies too from eating at all those fast food junk restaurants. Should start bringing in restaurants that offer healthier meals instead of all that deep fried crap that will give you a heart attack by age 50.

Who focking cares. I was hoping the place would get nuked?
