From Harford County government:
The Harford County Department of Community Services has compiled its annual catalogue of local nonprofit volunteer and giving opportunities for the upcoming holiday season. The catalogue is available online at http://www.harfordcountymd.gov/DocumentCenter/View/4963 and offers activities for organizations or individuals of all abilities interested in volunteering their time to support their neighbors in need. According to the 2014 Maryland Poverty Profiles Report, over 19,000 Harford County residents are living in poverty; approximately 13.3% are children and 5.5% are senior citizens.
The listing includes a directory of organizations requesting donations. Harford County nonprofits and faith-based organizations are seeking a variety of items including coats, non-perishable food products, toys and school supplies.
Residents can also use the listing to find locations, dates and times for when holiday meals and other types of assistance are offered.
“Especially during this holiday season, I hope we can all lend a hand so that no one in Harford County goes to bed hungry or without a warm place to sleep,” said County Executive Barry Glassman.
Nonprofit organizations in need of volunteers may be added to the catalogue by contacting Kristy Heim in the Department of Community Services at 410-638-3389 or klheim@harfordcountymd.gov. Additionally, the Department will connect businesses and civic groups interested in volunteering to local charities in need of support.
“Harford County charities are always in need of volunteers and donations, but the nonprofits that provide assistance to children, families, and individuals experiencing homelessness are especially busy from November to January,” said Amber Shrodes, director of Harford County Community Services. “We are pleased to help connect individuals and businesses with those in need through our listing of options for volunteering and donating. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and spend time with friends, family and co-workers, while making a difference in our community. A wide variety of opportunities are available, so you are sure to find an organization that fits your passions and lifestyle.”
