From the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Baltimore:
Brian Lee Long, age 48, of Rising Sun, Maryland pleaded guilty today to theft of government property.
The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Kevin Perkins of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Special Agent Ed Collins of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
According to Long’s plea agreement, from April 8, 2001 through January 21, 2015, Long was employed at the Kirk U.S. Army Health Clinic at Aberdeen Proving Ground, initially as a paramedic, then as a supply technician at the Logistics Division. Long admitted that from October 1, 2014 through December 31, 2014, he stole 73 laptop computers, 19 desktop computers and three monitors from the Logistics Division warehouse.
Long sold at least 19 of the stolen laptop computers and four of the stolen desktop computers to pawn shops for $18,400. Long also provided four laptop computers to another person, who sold them to a pawn dealer.
The total loss to the government as a result of Long’s conduct was $40,000, which is the amount Long is required to forfeit as part of his plea agreement.
Long faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for theft of government property. U.S. District Judge George L. Russell, III has scheduled sentencing for February 12, 2016 at 9:30 a.m.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the FBI and U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command for their work in the investigation. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron S. J. Zelinsky, who is prosecuting the case.
Just Great says
You can be a good christian and mow down a father on his bike while drunk and texting, then leave him to die in the gutter and get 7 years.
Stealing 90 computers over 14 years and you get 10 years.
WTF?
segram99 says
He stole the computers over a 3 month period, not 14 years. Federal charges and sentencing guidelines are a whole different ball of wax.
none says
You do realize those computers were bought with your tax dollars. Hang him!
Kelsey says
Hang him? Really? That is one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard! Imagine if this was your family member and someone said this! How would you feel?
Kelsey says
I find these comments pathetic! This man is my father! He made a big mistake and we all do. If this man was someone in your family I bet it would hurt you to see these hateful and disgusting comments. Think about what you put on the internet because you words can hurt.
Sheeple says
A mistake is adding a tip wrong, this was willful theft, he is a thief! I always liked Brian, but a thief is a thief. My gift of soap on a rope way.
Kelsey says
Who are you to say something like that? Sure stealing not isn’t a mistake but no one wake up and decides they want to break the law. Your comment is uncalled for. Put yourself in my shoes. What if this was one of your family members to took a turn down the wrong path and there are people sitting behind a screen saying harsh and cruel things about them. You wouldn’t be so happy.
Melissa says
Kelsey do not read these horrible words he is your dad no matter what and he loves you I am sorry you and your family are going through this. Keep the good memories and just know it was a mistake unfortunately sometimes the punishment for a mistake is more than we can understand. Don’t let these people get to you he will always be your dad no matter what and he will ways love you.Hugs to all of you.
Kelsey says
Thank you so much Melissa! The world needs more people like you! Hope everything with you is amazing because you deserve it!
YourNameHere says
You keep using that word “mistake”. I do not think it means what you think it means.
HYDESMANN says
Was he also in charge of securing the runaway blimp? I mean stealing computers could have distracted him from his other job. Just asking.
not sure says
This could have been a blimp heist gone wrong. Are there any pawn shops in Anthony Township, PA?
Kelsey says
No he was not..
Jay says
Stealing 92 computers isn’t a “mistake” He deserves whatever he gets! Sorry for you that he made bad choices but he made a bad choice (over and over) to be a thief.
Kelsey says
I agree that this wasn’t a mistake, but something causes people to steal things and disobey the law. No one wakes up one day and decides they want to break the law.
Calculon says
He also plead guilty so there was likely much more than those 92 computers. It was a plea agreement after all.
Josh Roberts says
It’s rather comical to watch the same names over and over post their holier than thou shit while hiding behind a keyboard. Probably the same type who claim to be wholesome Christians but are the most judgmental and hypocritical beings around.
I’ve known Brian for many years, from the Fire Department, as a Paramedic, and sports. This is a guy who would do anything to help someone, and when he wasn’t battling his demons, was one of the best paramedics you could ask for. I’m not condoning any of his actions- he did wrong and now he must account for that. But those of us who have known him for so long have watched things slowly spiral out of control, any many efforts to help him were met by denial.
Who knows, he may have even helped improve or even save the life of one of your loved ones over the years. But here some of you sit, anonymously chastising someone without any kind of knowledge about him or the situation. Even someone who said they like him is talking shit (soap on a rope). You weren’t any kind of friend or liked him- because if you did, you would not be on here being an asshole. Maybe when you or one of your friends/family are wrapped up in a legal situation, the same treatment can be given to you. Oh wait- we’d never know, because you little pissants would rather type from the safety of mommy’s basement.
Nobody is making Brian the victim here, I surely hope he gets held accountable and the help he needs. It is disheartening to see someone brought down to that level. What’s more disheartening are the small-minded know-it-all’s casting aspersion on someone you don’t know. I believe that all things come around full circle.
To Brian’s family- those who have known him and worked with him send our support and wishes out to you thru this difficult time. He’s a good man who made some unfortunate choices and must account for them- but his mistakes do not cheapen what he’s done for so many citizens in this county. Keep strong and get him back to the comical and caring person we all knew him to be.
Melissa says
Very well said thank you! He saved many lives, more than I can count. My heart goes out to his family.
Kelsey says
Thank you so much for saying this. I hope these other people understand. It’s hard to see my dad go through this. I’m not saying that what he did was right absolutely not! I am saying that the things these people are saying are uncalled for! Thank you again!
Boo Hoo says
Boo Hoo. The guys a fcking thief and hopefully he becomes somebody’s Biotch in prison.
Josh Roberts says
You’re right, he is a thief. But he’s not some anonymous little bitch hiding behind a computer, is he? I’m thinking the only one who is another man’s “biotch” is you. Now go back and troll Craigslist, maybe this time you won’t have to pay for that tranny.
Boo Hoo says
Lol looks like he will be the ass burglar in the big house.
sue says
the only ass is you
Kelsey says
Hilarious coming from somebody who doesn’t know much about the story and frankly you don’t have the right to know. Put yourself in my shoes. What if this was your family member you would feel like a “biotch”
Old School Dispatch says
Very well spoken (written), Josh! Such a shame… you said it perfectly – when he wasn’t battling his demons, he was a heck of a nice guy.
Rob says
No different than the local Banks, NBRS and Cecil
A charming thief is still a thief. says
To say theft of government property – the stuff we all had to pay for – is rampant would be a missed opportunity to use the word epidemic. 92 computers had to disappear before anyone caught on? Why? I have no doubt they weren’t missed because they were surplus. He was able to sell 19 laptops and 4 desktops to pawn shops because they were never reported stolen – probably because they were never missed… perhaps because they were never needed. Unfortunately they don’t specify if they were new or outdated. So, where did the other 50 laptops and 15 desktops go? Friends? Relatives? Maybe he was just hoarding them. Among all the billions of dollars the federal government robs from us they can’t afford a couple surveillance cameras to protect what they wasted our money on? A few weeks back it was some genius taking apple crap and registering it to his own ID, before that it was construction materials… unfortunately the thievery goes on constantly at a low simmer and only the larger hauls get noticed. I know there are a lot of really good hard working federal employees… it’s just unfortunate that the other 95% make them look bad.
