From the Aberdeen Police Department:
The Aberdeen Police Department is investigating two separate incidents where women were approached on the Walmart parking lot & scammed of money. Two men told the women they were looking for a local African church. They were holding money and stated they wanted to make a donation. They then offered to donate to the women’s church if the women were willing to match the donation with their own money.
The men were driven to an ATM by the women and cash was withdrawn. The men then put their money in a handkerchief and asked the women to do the same for a “blessing”. After saying the “blessing” they gave the handkerchief to the women and left. The women later discovered that the handkerchief had been switched and was full of shredded newspaper. The women also discovered belongings missing from their cars.
The men were described as black males who spoke with an African accent. One was wearing a tan dress shirt and jeans and the other a blue hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
The Aberdeen Police Department asks that you please call & report anyone or anything suspicious and strongly discourages anyone from allowing unknown persons in their vehicle. Anyone with additional information is asked to call Detective Tomlinson at 410-272-2121.

They must have picked people with “stupid” stamped on their forehead.
I don’t think being angry at or dismissive of the victims is very helpful. This scam and its many versions have indeed been “around” for decades and decades (it was the motivating act at the beginning of the movie The Sting, for instance) , but that only means that it is one that continues to be successful, due to basic human nature. Yes, indeed, there is a good protection against it — never ever give your own money to anyone — but the word “con” is short for CONFIDENCE — the crook first gains your confidence, then abuses it. So the police do a responsible job by alerting us all to be on our guard!
I love the way you guys further demean the victims by saying how “stupid” they are. Quite frankly, the DAGGER should be censoring you, instead of the Crusher of Souls……
The only people dumber than the idiots who pulled this scam are the idiots who actually fell for it.
