Liriodendron Arts Gallery Presents the Artwork of Richard Chandler Hoff, “Inventing History”

The Gallery at Liriodendron is pleased to announce an art exhibit of the works of Richard Chandler Hoff entitled “Inventing History” beginning Sunday, August 30th – September 27th. Gallery hours are on Sundays 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Felton, Pennsylvania resident Richard Chandler Hoff is a nationally recognized artist working exclusively in graphite pencil on paper. Hoff’s drawings provide a pictorial narrative of life in America during the 1940s and ‘50s. In capturing the essence of life on the “home front,” Hoff depicts popular architectural and social icons of that era creating scenes of places where Americans gathered to pursue the fine art of having fun.

Architecture and light play key roles in his work and two major influences have had a profound effect on the use of these elements in his drawings. The first was Edward Hopper, an artist in whose work architecture played a prominent role. Hopper used buildings as well as light to distill the essence of what is American.

The second influence arose when Hoff became familiar with Life magazines from the forties. “The light in their photos seems ethereal and yet ready to burst off the page with great warmth and intensity,” says Mr. Hoff which he has come to associate with that time.

He prefers to work in graphite because he realizes how appropriate it is for illustrating an era whose photographic and cinematic imagery were predominantly in black and white.

Mr. Hoff’s work has been included in the Pennsylvania Art of the State competition for four consecutive years. His drawings have also been featured in American Artist and Drawing Magazines.
