From the Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Education:
The Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) is pleased to announce that Eden Mill Nature Center has been recertified as a 2015 Maryland Green Center. Maryland Green Centers partner with local schools modelling sustainable school practices, providing resources and forming partnerships that positively impact students, teachers and the community.
There are currently 41 Maryland Green Centers and over 480 Maryland Green Schools. The Maryland Green Schools program is nationally recognized as having significant impact with students and schools. The program encourages educational opportunities for preK-12 schools that increase awareness and understanding of environmental interrelationships that impact public health and our society, and that promote responsible environmental stewardship practices. The program is aligned with Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement 2014 goals and supports Maryland State Department of Education graduation requirements and standards.
“Maryland Green Centers offer local support to schools providing professional development to teachers and support at schools for student sustainable environmental practices. This local support is key to long-term success,” says Laura Johnson Collard, MAEOE Executive Director. Green Centers involve students in projects that save energy and reduce waste. Green Centers also provide opportunities for students to get outdoors on the schoolyard or at local nature centers or parks. The Maryland Green Schools program plays an important role in fulfilling the state’s commitment to ensure our young people become environmentally literate by the time they graduate.
MAEOE will celebrate with Green Schools, Green Centers and schools that are interested in knowing more about the program at the Maryland Green School Youth Summit on May 29, 2015, at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis.
