A woman sustained minor burns to her hand in an early Saturday morning fire in Joppa, fire officials said.
The fire was reported just before 1 a.m. Saturday morning by the occupant of a home on Neptune Drive in Joppa, according to a statement from the Office of the State Fire Marshal. A total of 30 firefighters from the Joppa-Magnolia, Aberdeen Proving Ground, White Marsh, Kingsville, and the Baltimore County fire companies responded and brought the blaze under control in approximately 20 minutes.
The woman was transported to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center with minor burns to her hand. The fire was ruled accidental in nature, and was traced to smoking materials discarded into landscaping near the front door.
Damage to the home was estimated at $30,000, while damages to its contents were estimated at $5,000, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. A family living in the home was displaced and is being assisted by the Harford County Disaster Assistance Team and the American Red Cross.

I’m glad no one was seriously injured or killed.

And this is just one of many reasons smokers shouldn’t just flick their butts wherever the hell they feel like it. It’s a nasty enough habit, but at least dispose of your butts properly.
