From Harford County Councilman “Capt’n” Jim McMahan and Bel Air Commissioner Susan Burdette:
SPRING FORWARD – Clocks ahead 1 hour Sunday
The start of daylight saving time does not have to ruin your sleep. We all hate to lose that hour but here are some tips on how sleep better.
Do you know why warm milk has a magical ability to send us off to dreamland? According to WebMD Dairy foods contain tryptophan, which is a sleep-promoting substance. Foods that are high in tryptophan include nuts and seeds, bananas, honey, eggs and milk. So a few perfect late night snacks to get you snoozing might include a bowl of cereal and milk, yogurt and crackers, or bread and cheese
BUT AVOID
Put Down the Burger and Fries! Curb the evening cup of coffee.
Even moderate caffeine can cause sleep disturbances. But don’t forget about less obvious caffeine sources, like chocolate, cola, tea, and decaffeinated coffee. For better sleep, cut all caffeine from your diet four to six hours before bedtime. Watch the Meds. Some over-the-counter and prescription drugs contain caffeine, such as pain relievers, weight loss pills, diuretics, and cold medicines. Here’s the catch-22 with alcohol: It may help you fall asleep faster, but you may experience frequent awakenings, less restful sleep, headaches, night sweats and nightmares. If you’re consuming alcohol in the evening, balance each drink with a glass a water to dilute the alcohol’s effects. For a good night’s sleep, the better bet is to avoid alcohol four to six hours before bedtime. Avoid spicy foods and keep Protein to a minimum.
Don’t Be Fooled by a Relaxing Smoke. Nicotine is a stimulant, with effects similar to caffeine. Avoid smoking all together and especially before bedtime or if you wake up in the middle of the night.
Sidewalks in the Town of Bel Air should be in the process of being cleared. Snow stopped at 8 PM last evening so sidewalks within the Town of Bel Air should be cleared by 8 PM tonight. Ordinance applies to both Business and Residential properties.
Folks living in the county are urged to clean the sidewalks especially in the area of schools where our kids walk to and from their class rooms. Harford County does NOT have a sidewalk cleaning Ordinance, so just do it because it the right thing to do, OK?
