NEWS FROM HARFORD COUNTY EXECUTIVE BARRY GLASSMAN
Harford County Executive Barry Glassman is pleased to announce the creation of eight Community Advisory Boards to advise the Administration on matters of interest to local communities and to provide better communication between county government and the citizens.
“Allowing our communities to come together to have meaningful discussions about issues of local concern should be an important part of our decision-making process,” County Executive Glassman remarked. “The Community Advisory Boards will certainly not be the only means through which my Administration will interact with citizens, but they will serve a key advisory role in matters affecting local communities.”
The eight Community Advisory Boards are: Abingdon, Churchville/Creswell, Dublin/Darlington, Edgewood, Fallston, Jarrettsville/Norrisville, Joppa/Joppatowne, and Whiteford/Cardiff/Pylesville/Street.
The Community Advisory Boards will function in much the same way as did the former Community Councils and, prior to that, the Community Planning Councils. They will provide a forum for keeping communities abreast of important projects, programs, and events, and will serve as a source of information for both county government and interested citizens. The boards will consist of five (5) to ten (10) citizens selected by the county executive who collectively represent a diversity of interests and backgrounds. In addition, each board may have one student member who is enrolled in a high school in Harford County. Members will be expected to attend regular board meetings, ranging in frequency from monthly to quarterly. Meeting dates and locations will be determined by the county in consultation with each board. One change from the previous set-up is that citizens who live within the boundaries of an inactive board area are welcome to participate with an active board nearby, and boards will be encouraged to take a broader view of issues pertaining to their communities.
The previous Community Council areas of Abingdon/Emmorton and Bush River will be combined into one Community Advisory Board. Within the Bush River area, there are very active community associations in both Riverside and Forest Greens/Perryman, which provide citizens with community-level interaction, and county government will explore working with those associations to provide improved cooperation and communication. Residents of any portion of the Bush River area are welcome to participate in the Abingdon Community Advisory Board.
While two community areas are joining together, one previously inactive area is being revived. Recognizing sufficient citizen interest and at the urging of County Councilman Pat Vincenti, County Executive Glassman is planning to establish the Churchville/Creswell Community Advisory Board, serving the areas of Churchville, Creswell, and Fountain Green.
Citizens interested in serving as a Community Advisory Board member should visit www.harfordcountymd.gov/cab to download an application or call the Office of Citizens Affairs & Administrative Services at 410-638-4109, ext. 1824 to request an application via email or U.S. mail. Any citizen unsure regarding with which Community Advisory Board he or she should participate should also contact this office. To ensure consideration for the initial round of appointments, citizens should return their applications by February 27; however applications will be accepted at any time during the term.
You may also contact Harford County Councilman Chad Shrodes for more information.

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Measles cases are on the rise in the U.S. While there are no reported cases in Maryland, Harford County Health Department Health Officer, Susan Kelly urges everyone who has not had measles, and who was born between 1957 and 1990, to have his or her blood tested for immunity to measles and/or receive a second dose of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.
Persons who are unsure whether they are immune to measles should first try to find their vaccination records or documentation of measles immunity. For those without written documentation of measles immunity, vaccination with the MMR vaccine is recommended. There is no harm in getting another dose of MMR vaccine if you may already be immune to measles (or mumps or rubella).
Measles is a serious viral respiratory disease that lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person that spreads to others through coughing and sneezing. The measles virus also can live for hours in the air or on a surface making it extremely contagious. Symptoms of measles begin with a high fever. Other symptoms include:
• Cough, runny nose and red eyes
• Rash of tiny, red spots that start at the head and spread to the rest of the body
• Diarrhea
• Ear infection
Call your health care provider immediately if you experience these symptoms. www.harfordcountyhealth.com

NEWS FROM THE DEER CREEK COFFEEHOUSE
March Performer–Mike Agranoff
On Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 pm Deer Creek Coffeehouse welcomes, minstrel, humorist and storyteller, Mike Agranoff. He is one of those folk performers that steadfastly defies categorization, and yet amasses stalwart fans from folk aficionados of all categories. He draws his material from sources as diverse as traditional ballads and fiddle tunes, Scott Joplin rags, Tin Pan Alley, contemporaries in the Folk World, and his own witty pen. He delivers it with a skilled hand on guitar, piano, and concertina, an almost telepathic transmittal of the essence of the song, and occasionally sly twinkle in the eye in anticipation of some of the most horrible parodies ever perpetrated on an unsuspecting audience. Signature features of Mike’s performances are his inclusion of some heart-stopping spoken word pieces that rivet the listener to unforgettable stories.
Concert appearances include Godfrey Daniels, Bethlehem, Pa, Club Passim, Cambridge, MA and the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
Deer Creek Coffeehouse is located at 1022 Main St., Darlington, MD Suggested donation: $10 for Adults and $5 for Students
Tickets only available at the door. Only cash and checks to Deer Creek Coffeehouse accepted. Homemade baked goods, snacks, coffee, tea, water available for purchase.

Darlington Apple Festival
Being the chairperson of the Darlington Apple Festival I am very often confronted by people that have issues with our festival. Much of it is understandable, it is a stressful day for so many of us with traffic nearly impassable and if you live anywhere near the center of town the foot traffic is crazy, Every year it amazes me the things that strangers do to our neighbors yards and property.
With this said it also amazes me how many people do not totally understand the positive impact of this festival on our small community. I am looking for feedback to post on our Facebook site, to use in interviews and to post in the e-newsletter to help our community understand what this festival means to us and to you.
Please let me know what your thoughts are, how has this festival helped your organization and what this festival means to you by either emailing to our inquiries email address or our post office address above.
Respectfully,
Elaine Calderon, Chairperson
