From Harford United Charities:
In lieu of an inaugural ball, County Executive Barry Glassman has partnered with Harford United Charities to host the second annual 5K Run/Walk to End Homelessness in Harford County. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, March 22, in the Town of Bel Air. Through Harford United Charities, funds raised from participants and sponsors will support Harford Family House, Mason-Dixon Community Services and The Sharing Table. Money raised will also benefit Harford County’s emergency housing fund.
“As a state senator, I initiated this fundraiser last year to aid the homeless in Harford County,” Mr. Glassman said. “As county executive, I hope to continue supporting local organizations that provide food, shelter and clothing to our fellow citizens in need. Citizens of all ages are invited join in this healthy, family-friendly event. Run with me, walk the course, volunteer, or be a sponsor, and help improve lives in our local community.”
A total of 223 homeless persons were identified in Harford County last year by the Department of Community Services in a point-in-time homeless count conducted in January, 2014. Of the total, more than half were women, nearly 40% were aged 18 or younger, and 42% suffered from one or more disabilities. More information about Harford County’s homeless population can be found here: http://www.harfordcountymd.gov/services/community/doc/2342-1534.pdf
Proceeds from the 2015 5K Run/Walk will benefit the following nonprofit organizations assisting homeless persons in Harford County.
Harford Family House provides housing, resources and support to families with children in the community who are experiencing homelessness. Through educational workshops, referrals to appropriate community partners, and individualized one-on-one professional case management, each family develops a budget and an action plan to help them move from homelessness and hopelessness to permanent stable housing and hope for a better future. http://www.harfordfamilyhouse.org/
Mason-Dixon Community Services, Inc. is a nonprofit human services agency whose mission is to provide high quality services to low-income residents of Harford and York counties. Our agency offers emergency services (food, utility and eviction prevention) as well as services designed to assist individuals and families in crisis. http://mason-dixon.org/index.html
The Sharing Table in Edgewood is a coalition of churches and other community organizations organized in 1993, serving meals to make life a little easier and help extend the resources of many families. The Sharing Table places no qualifications upon those they serve, but welcomes all to the table. Please follow this link to learn more: http://www.sharingtable.org/

Hartford United Charities is formed by David Craig. What a way to keep your foot in the door. Im sure the CE knows that. It is great to help the homeless, but I’m sure David Craig wants a park named after him in Bel Air. When is the truth gonna set them free? How much of the proceeds are going to the homeless and how much is going back into the operating cost of United Charities.
jj johnson says
It’s “Harford” not “Hartford”. Are you even from around here?
runner says
you took the time to comment on Hartford instead of Harford and you can’t comment on how much is going to the charities or operating cost. Guess your one person who says, “look at the pretty flowers”. While everyone is taking money for a philanthropic charity and everyone looks at the spelling of a word. Gotta love the people from Hazzard County. Don’t delude yourselves. No one cares about HarFord county, outside of this provincial place. BUT keep thinking small and you will succeed.

God forbid you take off your tinfoil hat long enough to do a little research and find out the answer yourself.

Go to guidestar.org, you can find all you want to know about Harford United Charities. In fact here is a link to its 2012 Form 990. http://www.guidestar.org/FinDocuments/2012/522/137/2012-522137611-0907c30f-Z.pdf

No doubt this is run by a group of Republican insiders. Looks like more of an excuse to throw a big party every year in the name of a charity. That was the extent of their fundraising in 2012. Took in $86k for a “gala” that cost them $50k netting the charity $36k. Similar results for 2011.
None of the trustees which included David Craig and his wife took any kind of salaries for their services.
Seems fairly innocuous as far as charities go.
Pillar of Truth says
I should also point out that in 2012, HUC gave out a total of $51,000 to Chesapeake Therapeutic Riding, Arrow Child & Family Ministries, Father Martin’s Ashley, The Rotary Club of Bel Air and Grace Place.
wants answers says
Who runs the charity and how much goes to operating cost?
Not A.T. says
As I found out through a simple phone call, to answer your question, all funds beyond the amount to host this event (course timing company, t-shirts, etc.) will be going to the charities listed. Harford United Charities is volunteer run and does not have ‘operating costs’ like a business would. There are no ‘paid’ staff members.
more questions says
Brings up another question. What was the phone number you called and who has the “authority to dole out the funds. What percentage is going to “developing” t shirts, and other items needed for the event. What are the criteria for asking for “assistance” from this charity controlled by the CE.
Not A.T. says
I contacted the individuals from the sponsorship form found on HUC’s facebook page.
Miss Gulch says
Good question
Morons says
You nut jobs want to blame everything on David Craig. Harford United Charities was formed by Jim Harkins and Ronnie Chenowith. It has traditionally been used as the philanthropic arm of the County Exec. Yes when craig was exec he used it too. How much energy do you waste being bitter?
republican nut job says
how much is operating cost and how much is actually going to the homeless. How about the Ben Carson Reading Room. I am a republican and would have voted for him, but he is a nut job. Glad the craig’s are gone, oh wait, he just moved to a new office and probably wants to get more parks named after him. I sure hope the CE stops the purchases that craig decided to override the county.
I want some funds says
Kinda like the slush fund of the former baltimore police commissioners. Not accessed by the average patrolman. Go figure.
Harford Slush Fund Answers says
So the CE has a “slush” fund and can dole out the money to whomever he wants. Sounds kinda fishy. Why are people so concerned about certain politicians and where they are. BUT we have a charity, in our county, that is controlled by the CE and is above and beyond the funds that are allocated. Sounds like something needs to be brought to the light of day. It was stated that Harkins started it. Wasn’t he the one who jumped ship and didn’t tell the voters and now has a cushy job with the MDOE. That’s beside the point, but where is the transparency in government. Why are people so negative to someone asking questions?
democrat says
So this is controlled by a republican and can be dispensed at his suggestion? I am all for helping needy people and making sure everyone has help, but see the comments and still have questions. Hopefully a lot of money can be raised for the different groups and help people.
Chris says
Barry Glassman did the same thing last year and he used his campaign funds to put on the event and donated more than the event actually raised so for all those questioning his intentions, he really has his heart in the right place over this, and it’s better than politicians having fundraisers or inaugural balls.
Good for him says
Not questioning his intentions. Saw the address is the county building. Barry, as you call him, is a good guy, but it brings up the question of why the CE has a charity, which he controls, and the expenses of putting on this run. If he used campaign funds, from his race, what does that say about the amount they will get this time? I’m all for charity, but would like aces equal to all people.
No more beggers says
Wouldn’t it be easier to make the homeless run 5 miles out of harford county. You can’t go to an intersection south of white marsh without seeing those lazy bastards on every corner.
Char says
Ok, stoops. Get with the program. This charity (HUC as it is known) has been in place since the turn of the millennium. So glad you are all “in the know” now. It’s a charity. A charity that gives out money to non-profits. I’m just happy to see it is a 5k run and not a Hoe-Down.
