Hey You says
Is John Ryan still the cook at the detention center? Plug the cooler in John
Oh No says
How much are we paying these clowns? What a waste of taxpayer money.
Ryan M says
This government agency shouldn’t exist. It’s a complete waste of money. This should be ran a by private companie. If the market calls for it. If the restaurant continues to get people sick then nobody will go there and they will shut down. Simple market principles. By having a mandated agency you’re allowing restaurants that might potentially get somebody sick everyday fix their cooler or heat their food up properly for that day. Then they go back and do what they were doing before you came in.
fish story says
Ryan,
The Dept of Health is a state chartered agency, part of HCG. It is charged with many public health duties and responsibilities with proper food management as if it was unchecked could potentially cause heath issues. The law was legislated and the process was created to solve a problem that the private market is unwilling or unable to enforce. It isn’t the biggest issue facing the marketplace and I agree that there could be a private market process to regulate it with less government interference but as it stands today, the restaurant industry isn’t very good at controlling itself either. Yes, we could leave it to people to get sick, die or get food poisoning and the ensuing civil lawsuits to follow just to get the government out of it, but it seems to me like the system works well enough. Just the threat of a big stick is sometimes needed to create a sense that food establishments can’t just cut corners and serve contaminated food without fear of being published or without fear of being shut down. Food contamination is a serious health issue and you may feel a little differently if your kids get real sick or deathly sick if eating contaminated food. Providing basic food safety is a legitimate public health concern.

@fish
Have you been eating the food that isn’t properly fixed. I’m sure there are more violations, but this under/over heated food is ridiculous. I have eaten meals, at the detention center, and it is a five star restaurant food. You get a full meal for breakfast. A sandwich, chips and a cookie for lunch. Another full meal for supper. It makes me want to go back, but there is one problem. I’d have to commit a crime and serve my time. It amazes me that there is all these violations and THEY ARE NOT BEING SHUT DOWN. You say this is government at work, but the only thing I see is them taking our tax dollars and making it look like they are doing a job. LOOK BUSY, LOOK BUSY AND THE TAXPAYER WILL NOT KNOW.
fish story says
I haven’t ever heard of any general consensus to shut down the Department of Health… They are making sure that foods are kept either hot or cold as mandated by health and food regulations which state law mandates. I think there are probably other areas in which less regulation would be needed or the industry could police itself. Building trades, plumbing, heating, gas connections, electric and water installations, exterior construction are also areas that require permits and inspections to ensure compliance with building and county codes. It is all in the name of safety and I don’t see anything wrong with it. Fire marshal regularly inspects buildings and fire suppression systems to ensure systems work properly in the name of public safety. The market has adapted quite well to these regulations and procedures. I am sure many providers in these business rather not have to get permits and obtain the needed inspections but it is a cost of doing business. If you like to bitch about government, at least make the attempt to make a coherent and constructive thought as to how it could be done better or show how it is done in other places without government interference. I think you just like to bitch just because government is involved..
obverweight ex inmate says
You must be a person who is very angry and needs to use the services of some of the departments you talk about. Your reply had nothing to do with the health department and checking the food. You must be one of the people who always say, “look at the butterfly”. The government works for the people and not the other way around. Why should the health department put out a list that only says the food is hot/cold. The citizens are not stupid and there are agencies that do a good job, but they are not in this article. Just the facts Ma’am. If you had been in court and wanted to say this, you would have been stopped. Where is the relevance to the above for mentioned article. I’m thinking you are the one with anger issues and want to bitch.

Link to the full report broken….
Brian Goodman says
Fixed. Thanks.
Common Sense says
The way health department is enforcing code violations every food service facility would fail every inspection.
So today’s enforcement system is subjective and it should give no one comfort.
This is not a sensible way to keep safe the food supply chain.
Should they discontinue inspections? Of course not.
But they should actually dig a bit deeper and take food samples and test for contamination, bacteria, e coli, salmonella, etc…
And when they find those contaminants close the food facility down.
Having an army of thermometer armed terrorists is not protecting anyone.
Brian Goodman says
If you read the full report (link at the bottom of the story), you will see there are many local food service facilities that somehow find a way to pass the inspection. Not all of them fail.
Common Sense says
If inspectors applied the standards uniformly at every restaurant or food service facility most if not all sites would fail.
Inspections are subjective and not comprehensive.
Sam says
They do take samples if an illness is reported.
fish story says
Common Sense,
First, you should change your name because you speak none of what your name says, and 2nd the health department isn’t charged with protecting the food chain, only to inspect facilities for those procedures deemed necessary to reduce food contamination. The list given is public so the food places will have an incentive to not be on the list. If other more serious health issues are found such as standing water, unfiltered systems, mice and insect infestation can and has led to closings from time to time. In more severe cases in case of salmonella, legionaries disease and e coli places have been shut down for sure. The health department does this with the budget they have which isn’t meant to have a health cop on every store and taste the food. You are complaining of too much government intervention or too little? Speak with sense!!
ex-inmate,
Once an inmate always an inmate! I think you are the one with anger issues. When the government is doing its charged duties by inspecting stores, it is for the public benefit as laws were passed to protect public health. It isn’t that much of an intrusion on anyone, specially a restaurant owner as they already know that complying with inspections and providing safe food is something important and necessary.
Common Sense says
fish story –
Of course it’s the integrity and safety of food supply chain.
Health departments nationwide close down restaurants and food facilities after an e coli, salmonella, etc…after there’s an outbreak and seldom if ever do they knowingly prevent these foodborne illnesses.
n435 says
The health department job is to inspect food preparation facilities and they don’t test harvesting or processing or test the food! The supply chain is inspected by the Agriculture department, FDA or by other means. The supply chain could be contaminated but the Health department only checks on food preparation.
Chef Sergio says
The food supply chain doesn’t end at the restaurant’s back door.
What a friggin jerk you are.
Jb says
What do the “Critical violations noted” stand for? ..like 6b.
LOL says
Lots of schools always show up on these reports.
What up wit dat?
Kharn says
Random inspections aren’t as random as you’d expect.
Soul Crusher 2 says
Where are the food inspectors at the places that have “All You Can Eat” buffets? Where are they to fine the citizens who famously sneeze or breath on the open food?
Hedley Lamarr says
The inspectors do go to the “All You Can Eat”, problem is the food is all gone because all the fat hogs chow down and stuff their jaws like a hamster does for reserves.
Soul Crusher 2 says
Ahh yes, I have been to the Golden Corral on 40. Thankfully, it was a walk in and walk out situation!
Lisa says
They need to go to Golden Corral in Aberdeen while I enjoy eating there it’s been too many times the food is cold or half warm half cold which is most dangerous!!
Caught salmonella says
If you go to golden corral make sure you have great health insurance you are gonna need it.
Chef Sergio says
Wow the Health Department has done a stellar job thumbing down comments they don’t like.
A Realist says
The worst is having an inspection at an elementary school and fail!!! Ijs
