A Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company ambulance was struck by another vehicle while transporting a patient to a local hospital Wednesday.
The accident occurred Wednesday afternoon when the ambulance, while taking a patient to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center was hit by another vehicle at the intersection of Route 24 and West Ring Factory Road, according to Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association spokesman Rich Gardiner.
The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A second ambulance was called to the scene to complete transport of the initial patient.
Route 24 was shut down Wednesday afternoon while Maryland State Police investigated the accident. Additional details were not immediately available from state police.

Surprising this doesn’t happen more often.

In the last three days the most used item in my vehicle has been the horn.
Seems no one remembers how to drive anymore. Thanks Sheriff Gahler for keeping the roads safe during the holidays.
Concerned Teacher says
How is it Gahler’s fault that people losing their minds the three or four days before Christmas combined with bad weather has caused traffic backups and accidents? Sounds like a Bane apologist taking yet another cheap shot.
BillH says
When was the last time you saw a Sheriff with someone pulled over giving them a ticket? With the sheer number of bad drivers it should be a daily scene for all of us but it isn’t.
BillH's Momma says
I heard all these problems are being caused by some idiot who won’t stay off his horn.

Have you ever travelled on Rt. 1 in PA? Every traffic light has a sensor on it that detects emergency vehicles and when it’s activated the light turns green for the emergency vehicle so traffic can safely move out of the way. Anyway, I’ve always thought 24 should be equipped with the same technology to prevent crashes. My two cents.

Most of the red lights in Harford County already have them
John Wayne says
I did not realize they had them. The ones in PA have a flashing white light when activated. I guess ours don’t. Thanks!
Francis C. Nutsweuner says
Are you kidding? The way #BelAirDrivers are, a fuggin’ railroad crossing gate won’t stop them running the red light racing to get a chickum sammich.
You can’t drive anywhere around “Bel Air” without some jaghoff riding 2′ behind your rear bumper.
I would have thought a few years worth of these nutjobs wrecking their fancy cars would fix bad driving habit, nope. These suckers are making insurance companies cash registers go ‘cha ching’
Wayne R. Notsfrom says
That is the funniest comment I have read all night. I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes and wished I had a Depends.
I totally agree. What I can’t understand, is how on Mountain Rd. people end up in the ditch in the opposite lane on a clear day.
Hedley Lamarr says
The article does not say if the Ambulance had it lights and sirens on, was it a life threatening transport to the hospital or was it a non life threatening transport. If it was a non life threatening transport I would hope that the driver of the ambulance obeyed the traffic laws, and if it was life threatening the driver of the ambulance still needs to use caution, I have seen time and time again some of these drivers blazing thru busy intersections without slowing down.
