From the Harford County Republican Women:
The Harford County Republican Women (HCRW) recognized three students from local Harford County Schools in the 4th Annual Constitution Day Contest during the November meeting.
In 2004, Congress passed a law requiring any institution receiving federal dollars to provide educational programming on the history of the Constitution on September 17th of each year. Four years ago, HCRW launched the annual Constitution Day challenge for the Harford County students. “September 17th is significant because it was on September 17, 1787 that the Constitutional Congress signed the Constitution,” says HCRW Constitution Day Chair Merrie Street. “Our club understands the importance of this unique document and our decision to launch this Constitution Day contest is an effort to encourage students of every age to study the Constitution and to share it with others.”
Recognized in 2014
Elementary School: Tyler Hansen, 4th Grade from Deerfield Elementary.
Middle School: Tyler Kaplan, 6th grader from Bel Air Middle School.
High School: Kayla Everett, Senior from Joppatowne High School.
Tyler Hansen, the elementary school winner, earned $250.00 for his poster “What Freedom Means”. Tyler Kaplan, the middle school winner, earned $ 500 for his essay entitled What We Need Is Government Control Not Gun Control. Selected for her thought- provoking lesson plan for ninth graders, Kayla Everett, the high school winner earned a $ 750.00 prize donated by State Senator and County Executive Barry Glassman.
The students and their parents joined members of the Harford County Republican Women and Harford County Executive-elect Barry Glassman at the Harford County Republican Women’s November meeting at Bellissimo to present the awards to each of the 2014 winners.
Putting the spotlight on the Constitution was the motivation behind the HCRW launch of the annual Constitution Day challenge for the county’s students.
The contest is open to all students in Harford County, public, private and home-schooled. The Harford County Republican Women’s Club will begin accepting entries in May 2015. More information will be available at www.harfordcountyrepublicanwomen.com .
