An Edgewood home was damaged in an accidental Friday night blaze, fire officials said.
The fire was discovered in an upstairs bedroom by the occupant of a two-story home in the 600 block of Charwood Court in Edgewood shortly before 6 p.m. Friday night, according to a release from the Office of the State Fire Marshal. A total of 20 firefighters from the Abingdon, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Bel Air, and Joppa-Magnolia fire companies responded and brought the blaze under control in approximately 20 minutes.
The fire was traced to improperly discarded smoking materials, the State Fire Marshal’s Office said. Damage to the home was estimated at $30,000 and damages to its contents were estimated at $20,000. A family was displaced as a result of the fire and was being assisted by the Harford County Disaster Assistance team and the Red Cross.

Maybe the reporter should do a little more digging. This fire was in the Abingdon Fire company area…….Why was that company late for the show?? Truth is, Abingdon fire company has had a lot of “no-shows”. Other companies throught the area are having to leave their first due area to run calls in Abingdons run area. The county needs to look into the numbers for this fire company. You will see that they are the top 3-4 on fire call totals. But, when they don’t turn a wheel on a lot of calls latley, its hurting the citizens. They need to voice their concerns for lack of fire protection near Abingdon.

Sounds like BS. Prove your stats.

No BS there…….listen to the scanner or ask a member about the emails and meeting called by the higher up’s trying to get members to show up for calls.

Seems like issues every “company” faces. Maybe one “company” has a group of more enthusiastic members than another? Seems like recruitment efforts and leadership shuffles will fix internal politics and other issues.
ABINGDON just reopened Long Bar station this year, can’t imagine they are hurting for good members

I believe opening that station had a lot to do with ambulance billing. They have a paid medic crew at that station. That doesn’t help them get out for fires. Two weekends in a roll, they had a control burn on Rt. 40 at the old motel. They had 50+ members there but needed Joppa, Aberdeen, Aberdeen Proving Ground and Bel Air to handle calls in there area the rest of the eveing and into the next day. The is no excuse for dropping calls one right after another. Two summers ago a house burnt down in Riverside……Joppa, Bel Air, Aberdeen, Level, Havre de Grace, Aberdeen Proving Ground put the fire out before Abingdon first piece of equipment arrived.

People complaining about so called No Shows at fire companies, but those same citizens wont volunteer… It is called a volunteer fire company for a reason….. Instead of being part of the problem, be part of the solution.
Your Daddy says
That guy is a joke.
Volunteers that don’t volunteer, sounds like those type of people need to be volunteered off the fire fighting job. Common sense, right?
Whats the other option? How about we just establish a paid county fire fighting force, repaint every single fire truck Red and put “Harford County Fire Department” on each one so all these small johnson tape measuring contest winners can find something else to complain about.

Well I hope you don’t live in the Abingdon Fire Company area…..Because if you call 911 for a fire you will probably see Joppa, Aberdeen, Bel Air or the Proving Ground before they get out for the call. If you are ok with waiting for help, I guess your right.
