From the Young Armed Forces Communication Electronics Association (Young AFCEAns) of Aberdeen:
The Young Armed Forces Communication Electronics Association (Young AFCEAns) of Aberdeen hosted their third annual 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk at the Ma and Pa Trail in Bel Air, Maryland on November 8th 2014. The 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk was the group’s largest fundraiser of the year, raising $5,000 in sponsorships that will directly benefit STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education in Harford County.
The proceeds this year will benefit Edgewood Middle School’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL). FLL is a robotics program that inspires students to get excited about science and technology. Students research real-world challenges to design, build and program autonomous robots and participate in FLL competitions to present their solutions to a panel of judges. The contributions raised from the Third Annual 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk will allow teams of Edgewood Middle School students to independently research, design, and program robots for the FIRST LEGO League competition.
The 5K race started promptly at 8 o’clock am with opening words from Edgewood Middle School’s principle Patrice Brown. Gary Martin, Deputy to the Commander at CECOM (Communications Electronics Command) participated in the race and shared closing remarks during the award ceremony that took place after the race. First place went to John Shaffer whose total time was 19:49 for the 5K. Additional race results can be found on the Elite Race Management website.
The Young AFCEANs would like to thank all of the participants, volunteers, and planning committee for coming out on a chilly Saturday morning to support STEM education in Harford County.
