The 15-year-old girl who died in an Edgewood stabbing Saturday night was identified by police Monday, and the connection between her alleged killer and the girl’s mother was detailed.
Melay Hernandez, 15, was killed in a stabbing which occurred in the 100 block of Reider Court in Edgewood Saturday night, according to Harford County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Kyle Andersen. Also injured in the attack was her mother, Maria Hernandez, 39, and her sister, also 15; the surviving youth’s name is not being released.
Ivan Bustamante, 21, of the 800 block of High Plain Drive in Bel Air was arrested early Sunday morning in connection with the stabbings. Bustamante’s father was dating the girls’ mother, according to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Cristie Kahler, but the motive for his alleged actions is still under investigation.
Bustamante is charged with first- and second-degree murder, two counts each of attempted first- and second-degree murder, and two counts each of first- and second-degree assault. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. in Harford County District Court.
WTH? Weird. Very Sad indeed.
WTH is right because what does killing a 15 year old and nearly killing her family solve?
I see that no one mentioned that he lives in Bel Air; Edgewood North.
Execute the retard. Oops I forgot, that’s illegal in Maryland. But so is murder so the victim loses and the murderer wins.
Hydesmann,
Your use of the word “retard” is very offensive and a slap in the face to people with cognitive disabilities. It’s a put-down to all the beautiful souls in this world born with a developmental disability or who acquired their disability through illness or injury and through no fault of their own.
Please be more sensitive. The guy who killed that sweet girl and hurt her mother needs to pay for what he did. Hopefully he will go to jail for a very long time. Unfortunately, nothing will bring the victim back. It is so heartbreaking.
Would you like to fill out a Hurt Feelings Report?
Here’s a clue, advice, and common sense. Don’t read what you find offensive. Do you get off on telling other people what to do?
Please hit “reply” and type up a multi paragraph chest thumping personal opinion, I look forward to seeing you waste your time because I really care.
If Governor O’Malley hadn’t for all practical purposes abolished the death penalty, I bet Mr Bustamante would be claiming he is retarded, since the Supreme Court says you can’t execute people that are so diagnosed.
You should know by now that people don’t use the word retarded referring to the mentally challenged! They use it for people who will try to pull the insanity plea in court.
Just making a comment on how disrespectful that word is to individuals with disabilities, and yes I know quite a bit about the subject. If folks don’t get it, I can’t help you. But I don’t want the use of a derogatory word to detract from the real issue and that is that an innocent young girl was murdered in cold blood. Hope that the perp goes away for a very long time. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family and their friends.
How come the headline doesn’t say Bel Air High grad? He murdered an EHS student was well liked, played in the orchestra and was a good student. This is a tragedy.
