St. Vincent
Director: Theodore Melfi
PG-13; 1 hr. 43 mins.
Trailer
Maggie (McCarthy), a single mother, moves into a new home in Brooklyn with her 12-year old son, Oliver (Lieberher). Forced to work long hours, she has no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of their new neighbor, Vincent (Murray), a retired curmudgeon with a penchant for alcohol and gambling. An odd friendship soon blossoms between the improbable pair. Together with a pregnant stripper named Daka (Watts), Vincent brings Oliver along on all the stops that make up his daily routine – the race track, a strip club, and the local dive bar. Vincent helps Oliver grow to become a man, while Oliver begins to see in Vincent something that no one else is able to: a misunderstood man with a good heart. (Synopsis by Weinstein)
Check out my review later this week on The Dagger.
John Wick
Director: Chad Stahelski
R; 1 hr. 36 mins.
Trailer
An ex-hitman comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him. With New York City as his bullet-riddled playground, JOHN WICK (Keanu Reeves) is a fresh and stylized take on the “assassin genre”. (Synopsis by Lionsgate)
This is a great role for Reeves: lots of action and little talking. There isn’t a lot of depth here, but it is an enjoyably cool action movie. See it.
Ouija
Director: Stiles White
PG-13; 1 hr. 23 mins.
Trailer
In Ouija, a group of friends must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board. (Synopsis by Universal)
In the spirit (rimshot) of this film, let’s consult the official Dagger Ouija board. “Ouija board, why is this film so terrible?” Wait, an answer is coming … yes…it has spelled, “b-e-c-a-u-s-e M-i-c-h-a-e-l B-a-y i-s i-n-v-o-l-v-e-d.” This thing never lies. Skip it.
Upcoming DVD Releases
Snowpiercer
Director: Joon-ho Bong and Bong Joon-Ho
R; 2 hr. 6 mins.
Trailer
In this sci-fi epic from director Bong Joon Ho (The Host, Mother), a failed global-warming experiment kills off most life on the planet. The final survivors board the SNOWPIERCER, a train that travels around the globe via a perpetual-motion engine. When cryptic messages incite the passengers to revolt, the train thrusts full-throttle towards disaster. (Synopsis by TWD-Radius)
A rare thoughtful take on the post-apocalyptic flick. It doesn’t hurt that this is one of the most amazingly artistic and original sci-fi films to come out in a long time. This is hard to describe without giving the best parts away, but should be on your must watch list. See it.
