I talked to a friend and mentor. He is lifelong Harford County resident, business owner and member of the Harford County Chamber. He is one of those guys you just like right away. He was leaning seriously Bane.
We both agreed Bane is a nice guy and easy to talk to. If elections were decided the basis on being nice this election would be a slam dunk.
My friend did not know much about Banes decisions as Sheriff, but then who does….
He did not like the helicopter Sheriff Bane saddled on Harford County. There are actually four total. Only one flies.
He did not like that Sheriff Bane would use forfeiture to fund the helicopter.
Forfeiture is the practice of the police taking your stuff without a trial.
He did not agree with Bane getting tanks for the county.
He asked, “Why do we need tanks?” Beats me buddy!
What’s next, are we going to get machine guns, bazookas and flame throwers because the federal government’s handing them out.
He did not agree with pushing tanks and helicopters on taxpayers without public input.
We don’t need tanks and helicopters in Harford County.
He did not agree with building a brand new jail that sits nearly empty.
He did not agree with deputies not getting raises.
He did not agree with under cover cars being able to pull over citizens.
He did not agree with deputies wearing military like uniforms when making traffic stops.
The next Sheriff of Harford County should give those helicopters to a aviation mechanical school and let student learn how to fix helicopters.
Now the tanks… maybe we could paint them pink and turn them into ice cream trucks. Everyone likes ice cream.
This is one race in Harford County where your vote can make a difference. Those that know Bane best know he needs a vacation.

We are now allowed to election our school board. Let’s get rid of the old appointed YES men and women. Our children deserve a school system that lives in its budget and honors the teachers contract. They control half the counties budget. It is a very important job in Harford County.
I respect their service but we need people who will balance the budget…
District A Fred A. Mullis: I have known Fred for over 8 years the longest of all the candidates. By no means is he a yes man. He is going to make sure the budget doesn’t have “short falls”.
District B Bob Frisch: Bob was elected to the board 4 years ago in District A. Now he has been redistricted into District B. It’s noteworthy that in 2010 Bob got more votes than the councilman in district A. Bob works very hard and shows up at every meeting. This guy is like a skinny Ray Lewis… he is everywhere, every event, every meeting.
District C Joe Voskuhl he lives in the district I vote in, district C…. he has my vote.
District D Mike Simon: The only candidate who openly came out and criticized Common Core. Common Core is the federal takeover of our local schools. This program is being forced on the states and is already 1 Billion Dollars over budget. I like MIKE!
District E Both candidates have similar views. Art Kaff is the incumbent.
District F Michael Hitchings is an idea factory. A key element missing in public schools (all of them not just HCPS) is parental involvement. He wants to focus on getting all parents involved in the education of their kids. That’s a message both teachers and parents need to hear. MAKE IT MIKE!

What? Why is this a blatant ad for Gahler? Seriously? I don’t see Gahler being endorsed other than by Eric Daxon who has no standing in Harford County. Gahler is a bully and has based his entire campaign on bashing Bane. Bane is a good guy and has done a good job.
No one other than 2 former Sheriffs, Gov. Ehrlich, Sen, Jacobs, many part command staff members, the Corrections Deputies in an overwhelming majority and more votes by active deputes in the office than Bane. I agree that Daxon’s comments are overboard, but Gahler is the pick. Sorry you want to sell a vindictive has been but fact are facts.
Jeff Gahler is not the man you think he is. As a matter of fact, I think he would wet his pants in a fire fight. If you guys up there in Harford County want to put an MSP Nazi in charge of an already screwed up Sheriff’s Department, then so be it. In my opinion, there has been a push for former MSP Commanders to try and become Sheriffs in other counties too. Just remember, the MSP is a Para-Military Organization ran by the Governor, a Sheriff’s Department is a local police agency that is supposed to protect the citizens of its jurisdiction. There is a big difference between the two. To tell you the truth, I don’t like Bane much because he allowed Nazi’s like Sean Marston to break the law for the sake of forfeitures. I really don’t like the fact that he still employs Sean’s stinking a$$ even though I proved he committed perjury in court documents in my case and that he committed open perjury on the stand in front of Judge Bowen. However, he may not have known everything that little hobbit was up to while he was running his Terrorist Team in your County. However, Gahler is a secretive snake, that started a spying organization that gave MSP Detectives unlawfully gained intel on what citizens are up to. That’s not how this country is supposed to work. If you guys think all those MSP busts on I95 by Paul Quill, James Russell and Timothy Mullins were coincidental, then you are out of your minds. They had info gained by illegal use of wire tapping that gave them the edge. If you put Gahler in charge, watch your phone calls boys, they will be monitored, even on you cops…..

Since this story is still HOT and on page 1 of the Dagger, I also have this to add. The MSP and the Harford County Narcotics Task Force, were using a cellular phone spying software that was illegally installed on cellphones. The police thought they had a legitimate warrant from county judges to install this software, but a county judge does not have the jurisdiction to allow this, only the feds. This software was installed during the busts of criminal offenders and was used to track them, listen to calls, intercept voicemails, intercept text messages and to actually listen in on the defendants when they were not using the phones. Furthermore, the MSP and the Harford County Narcotics Task Force was getting information directly from a Homeland Security Office in Atlanta, Georgia, by the use of illegal roving wiretaps. This was all setup by Mr. Gahler and others in the MSP, when Gahler was Executive Assistant to the MSP Office of the Superintendent back in 2003-04, coordinating efforts involving Law Enforcement directly with Former Governor Robert Ehrlich.

If the police thought they had a legitimate warrant I don’t fault the police. I would have an issue if they “knowingly” had violated the law by installing the software and then used it to obtain information.

The words used were your words, not mine. If we take for the truth what you have written then one should believe that the Cops didn’t know the warrants they were operating under were not legitimate. You need to mean what you write or at least admit that you didn’t say something very well.
I stand by my comments that, if the police thought they were operating within the law according to the warrants issued by a local county judge, then I don’t have a problem with their integrity.
You may, or may not be correct with regard to what the police really know about the warrants. Unless you can prove it one way or the other, it is your opinion and total speculation, which, you are entitled too, as am I.

I don’t believe Jon ever said he was innocent. I believe he is saying that the evidence obtained by the police was illegally obtained, thus, the evidence should have been thrown out by the court. When the court refused to throw out the evidence, and Jon’s legal representation (in his opinion) played along with the court, he was left with taking a plea. Whether any of that is accurate is not for me to judge. He is entitled to his opinion as are we.
He is not the first, nor will he be the last person in our country convicted on the basis of illegally obtained evidence. There are many cases past and present that bear this out. Most Police Officers are people of integrity and play by the rules. Unfortunately there are a few that go rouge and end up giving all of those associated with them a bad rap. With regard to the Court’s and the legal representation available to persons who have to appear before the court, the same applies. You would expect that there is a balance between the courts, states attorney and the police where wrongdoing is ferreted out. When that doesn’t happen it makes for a really bad situation for the person who is wronged.
And yes, I know that he has a significant disdain for the police, along with the States Attorney, and the Courts in Harford County.

Mike Welsh, The Judges of Harford County and The Harford County Law Enforcement should have known since 2007 that the use of that Cellular Phone Spying Software is illegal. The Cops and the Judges act as if they didn’t know, however, both should have known in order to be Compliant with DOJ Standards. I urge you to go for a ride along one Summer Friday night and get a glimpse of what we deal with everyday. You’d see that having a helicopter giving you another set of eyes is reassuring. You’d see how that unmarked car is able to sneak up on that drunk driver before he kills someone. You’d see that having load bearing vests and cargo pants with pockets takes the weight off our backs so maybe we can play with our kids and not grimace in pain. You’d see we don’t have tanks. We have two crappy Humvees that we use in the snow when our citizens call for help and the vehicles the County buys us are only front wheel drive. You’d see the armored vehicle the SRT uses protects them when the bad guys is shooting at them. You’d see that your stay at home computer website business is nothing compared to what we deal with and you never will.
I just had a disc removed in 2012 from the gun belt and now have no feeling in my right lower leg and I am loosing feeling in my feet. Uniforms should be changed to BDUs and tactical vests to make doing the job easier. No bad guy is impressed by the shirt and tie. It took Joe Meadows to get us unmarked cars for Patrol and Traffic. Marked cars don’t deter crime. Motors should be used for traffic enforcement as they were in the past. Deputy’s should have tactical weapons to give them a fair advantage on the streets. I disagree with the helicopter. Tactical vehicles are needed. Look no further then Ferguson Police incident. I don’t see Jeff coming in and taking the department back to the dark ages.
Wow! Real us (militarized police) against them (a neighbor) attitude. Nothing fights crime better than strutting the streets all tacticalled up lugging full auto – besides, when in the slightest fear a 30 round mag blasting auto is the answer. And, since most of the terrain around here looks like a pizza place or a beauty parlor, I would be interested in the special camo design for that.

I think you are spot on with your comments and your vote.
This is an excuse to look military, which makes it all about you. It should be about the community. It isn’t about you getting to go home every night or about you playing with your children. It is about your job, which is about the community. Police specifically are to represent themselves non-military. They are to be part of the community, which in fact, they are dependent upon to successfully do their job.
If acting and looking military was really about law enforcement, the change would have been made several generations ago. Those preceding generations knew that the last thing they wanted to do was give the impression of an occupying force. What is it that so many officers now want to copy military style and tactics – and making every excuse to do so.
Do you remember the LAPD shoot out with the two heavily armed bank robbers. I would say be prepared for the worse in this day and age. New York PD just had an officer hacked with a hatchet and look what happened in Canada. Times have changed. Give the police every advantage you can.
Marc, times haven’t changed. We have been going at each other with hatchets for over 10 thousand years – and in case you missed it, the terrorist in Canada was stopped by an elderly gentlemen dressed in formal attire using a simple handgun.
Not only that, when you bring up an isolated bank robbery that happened in 1997 (over 15 years ago!!) as a reason for law enforcement to dress and load out as military, you suggest a personal pathology that is inconsistent with the proper charge given to you by society.
The goal of the the military is to kill people and break things. The responsibility of the police is to protect and serve the community at large – and that is only accomplished with the support of the community. If you think overwhelming fire-power and intimidation accomplishes that goal, then you fail to understand why the police have lost support in large segments of our society.
I understand there is something snappy about battle dress. I used to play soldier myself as a child. I would take breaks from battle and sip my canteen. So too, you could dress in tactical attire and take lunch at the Burger King – perhaps pretending that you’re eating an MRE.
But then, don’t you want the other folks in the burger place with you to feel safe and comforted in your presence instead of asking themselves where is the war?
They do it because they want to be an occupying force. They want all of us, to be suppressed by all of them. Funny thing is most of them, were the little punks we used to beat the hell out of in High School. It doesn’t take a lot to rule by force or fear of force, the Nazi’s figured that out long ago. Our government has been trying to duplicate the Third Reich since the 70’s.

I often read articles that, in the end, I wish I had not wasted my time or was not in agreement with the article. I watch TV and don’t care for many of the things that I see on TV I doesn’t mean I quit reading articles or watching TV.
Apparently no one else cares to answer your question as they have not done so. So, again, I don’t care who is recommended for election by Eric, the Dagger, or even you. I am going to vote for who I want and so should you. I don’t need someone to tell me who I should vote for.
I guess I must’ve missed the tanks sitting at the precinct. Where is the HCSO keeping those Abrams anyway? Or are they running around in Panzers?
I know one of those helicopters is supposed to eventually be ready for operations (as a back up to Eagle 1 when it’s down for maintenance) and the others were acquired to be raided for spare parts. I didn’t think we should’ve gotten the helicopter in the first place, but it’s here now and there have been a few times it’s come in handy. I also think that funding through asset forfeitures is a terrible idea and opens up a huge can of worms that shouldn’t ever be touched. Asset forfeitures should be used for 1 time equipment purchases, not ongoing expenses.
I did see a crappy Humvee that no one wants to take out even when it might be somewhat useful in heavy or during a hurricane (which are the only times it’ll ever be used.) The thing leaks enough that the occupants might as well bring a bar of soap and take a shower while they’re in it.
As part of the agreement, those things are supposed to be maintained. Someone forgot to think that you have to pay to play soldier.
The Md. State Police suggested Harford County to get the helicopter. They were unable to assist at times because theirs was being used elsewhere and this helicopter costs half as much to operate since it is so small. Mr. Gahlers objection to the helicopter is another example of why he is not qualified to be a Sheriff. What Sheriff would not want up to date equipment to protect the citizens of his county. It has already been of service to the State Police and to Cecil County as well as here in Harford County. I met some of the officers that fly the State helicopter at a safety program at the Target parking lot.I asked them what they thought of Harford County having a helicopter and they said it was great, Takes more pressure off of them when they dont have to assist us. By the way why do Mr. Gahlers signs infer that the Sheriffs Union has endorsed him? The letters of the jailers union are so small and the star on his signs are clearly designed to fool people that might not know the truth. Is this the kind of person we want as Sheriff? I think not.

Add them all up and suddenly core expense, like salaries, never get done. Some bureaucrat has already sucked up the money for a personal image building enterprise.

What a Crock, that majority of Union supporters who backed Bane got their pay raise by way of the Senior DFC rank. You know they one Bane had nothing to do with. I wonder why the Detention Center Senior DFC’s didn’t get included in that?

In your above post you are supporting Sheriff Bane’s acquisition of a 40 year old helicopter.

I suppose you are referring to Sheriff Bane acquiring the helicopter. Ask yourself, is a helicopter over 40 years old “up to date equipment”? When you have three additional, non operational helicopters just to be able to cannibalize them for parts to keep the fourth one running, that Sir, is not up to date equipment.
I have viewed the video of debate between Bane and Gahler. Mr. Gahler states very clearly that he would not have acquired the aviation asset at this time. However, as Gahler pointed out, the asset is now in place, and he will give it every chance to succeed within the limits of cost versus return on investment. If the operational costs to the citizens of Harford County become to expensive compared to the viability of maintaining the asset he would cease its operation.
Of the two Deputy Sheriff’s Unions that exist within the HCSO, one endorsed Mr. Gahler and one did not. Why would you find it unseemly that Gahler would have an election sign that said one of the unions endorsed him?

Just curious and a bit off topic, but what did you think about the interview Jesse Bane had kn WBAL last Tuesday? I really don’t know the background on the hiring practices within the Sheriff’s office as relates to graduating from a Christisn school, but I thought Bane sounded very angry and defensive. He’s got to do a better job (in my opinion) staying professional.
Jesse Bane can’t stand anyone questioning him. He immediately becomes defensive and displays his anger through his curt answers and his body language. This man is extremely arrogant and always has been. If you think he displayed unprofessional behavior when being interviewed by a TV reporter, you would really be shocked to witness how he address his employees, especially those who he does not like. The man is a jerk, plain and simple.
You saw that in the Union debate video I posted. Oh wait, it was removed and I am being threatened by Union Officials to be removed from the Union. Sounds familiar doesn’t it, do something against Bane and pay the price. I have lost much sleep over this. How will my life go on if I am removed from the Union? I will learn my fate once the Union Lawyer reviews the complaint. It seems the Union President and Executive Board run things like Bane does. Or could it be Bane runs the Union still? No phone calls, just coward emails. This Union has grown to big for it’s britches. I think the FOP would better serve the Sheriff’s Office members. Maybe it is time for a change. No more supporting of Candidates who tell lies to get elected. Fair treatment of all who are charged and accused. No more special treatment for the minions who fall in line. Looks like the Union is using Union Dues to fund Jesse Bane’s campaign again, much like 2010. Shame on Bane and The Union leaders for using our dues to support any candidate in the election.
While crossing the parking lot of a Rehoboth Beach, DE outlet today, a white SUV came speeding by us not bothering to slow down or kindly let us cross. A quick look at the MD license tag read Harford County Sheriffs ofc 0175…. Interesting that our taxpayer money is paying for deputies to joyride in DE with his family that were also present in the vehicle. Who else feels the disadvantage of this situation?
These should be take home cars, not take on vacation cars.

Besides it is our tax dollars paying, fuel, tolls, maintenance, and insurance on these cars.
The take home car program is cost effective. You get the car and only you drive it and you take care of it. The car lasts longer then one that is driven 24 hours 7 days a week. As for the car out of state, may have been somewhere for training. You would need special permission to take your car out of Harford County for anything not related to training. A vacation would not be considered at all.
I knew a guy in the State Police who had a take home car and drove it everywhere instead of his personal car. Vacations, going shopping, poker games, etc. I seriously doubt there is any real oversight on these cars.

Interesting observations “Jim” and “what says.” I happen to know for a fact that multiple deputies and other staff members from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office had an authorized weekend training at the Eastern Shore to help children in the county. I assure you there was no “vacation” or “joyriding” as that is strictly prohibited by the agency. However, deputies are permitted to stop for any necessary bathroom breaks and food during travel. Your tax dollars do help pay for vehicle maintenance, but also help to create beneficial trainings for deputies not only to better serve you and your families, but to also better educate themselves.
In reference to a take home car policy, sounds to me like it’s pretty sound. Besides cost saving, it provides a general deterrence in crime – probably why Harford County is one of the safest jurisdictions in the entire state of Maryland.
Based on the aforementioned statements, pressuring Mr. Gahler and Sheriff Bane for their opinion is pointless considering agency policy strictly prohibits out-of-county joyriding and vacationing in agency vehicles. What the candidates might say however, is that in the future perhaps you should refrain from making arbitrary assumptions on topics in which you are not fully informed.

Lets be real, if this is true, the Deputy screwed up, got caught and should be disciplined. Why don’t the police get traffic citations regularly when committing the same infraction non police drivers do? And I’m not talking about speeding or going to a legitimate call for police service.

How is it that it appears to be the entire police force sits on this website all day long. Seriously, I support the cops, think the job is a tough one, but you guys do yourselves a real disservice by arguing like children 24/7. Only about 20 folks are posting on a regular basis, often using different names. The rest of the HCSO work force has been busy out and about putting up Gahler signs.
The senior leadership of the HCSO supports Bane, and rightly so, he gave them high prying positions regardless of their qualifications, but based on their support of him during he reelection campaign. The vast majority of employees do not support our current Sheriff. I have become convinced that a change in leadership is necessary at the HCSO and intend to vote for Gahler as do most of my friends and neighbors.

I would like to also bring to the attention of the rest of you that the Bane’s Union who ignored my requests to put giving money to a vote for Bane gave a large sum of money to him. Bane had stated he did not want their money just the endorsement yet in true Bane form took the money. This President is not different then the President’s before him. Bane is a true politician and he uses the unethical behavior to his advantage by keeping people who he may need down the road.
For the men and women of the HCDSU why do you continue to pay dues to a Union who only looks out for a certain few? Seventy four people did not vote for the endorsement because they do not trust the voting process. With good reason.
To Bane, you promised that you would not run in 2010 and after Meckley announced his campaign you came out and said you would run again. This put Jack in a bad spot. This is the first time I have ever voted and I’m not sure who to pick as the next sheriff. I see signs for both candidates “Deputies Endorse.” How can the deputies endorse more than one candidate at the same time? I’m trying to make an educated decision at the polls.

To answer your question about the Deputy endorsed signs, the Law Enforcement Union endorsed the incumbent and the Correctional Officers Union endorsed the challenger. Without taking sides, and looking from the outside in, this entire campaign makes many of us sick. The supporters for each candidate have shown their own ugliness in their posts here; of course well within their 1st Amendment Rights, but still sickening. My take, the challenger made numerous valid points about the Sheriff’s performance, but was fuzzy on how he planned to change things, as the Sheriff attacked the challenger without incorrect information and got extremely personal with some attacks about that ex trooper who is now the warden and used was his best man? That part was a bit below the belt in my eyes. If the Sheriff had left that part out, I think it would have made a better point.
Tough decision here, feel sorry for all in this department who go through this crap every four years.
Thank you for the post as far as the candidates it was helpful and seemed unbiased. I feel like when I vote for the President it won’t matter much it’s such a small drop in the bucket as far as me voting.Yet county positions I feel like my vote actually matters. I’m really torn, I’m going to read both Gahler and Bane’s websites again and go with my gut.

While it is true that the HCDSU endorsed Bane and the HCCA endorsed Gahler, all officers of the HCSO are deputies and if you add all of the votes together from both unions then Gahler would win. So it is more accurate to state that the Deputies endorsed Gahler. Of all the employees at the detention center regardless of rank or position, only 9 people voted to endorse Bane, that should speak volumes.
I completely agree with Hoping and Praying and HCCA Rep. It’s time for a much needed change. Bane has become complacent and has been for years.

I happen to know both Bane & Gahler and have been back & forth about whom to support. But now I see the “Deputies Endorse” signs added to Gahlers signs. I know the Deputies Union endorsed Bane and the Correctional Officers Union endorsed Gahler but, Correctional Officers are NOT Deputies so these signs about Deputies endorsing Gahler are lies, If Gahler is willing to lie to get elected I doubt I can trust him. I’ve read about lots of accusations from both about the other lying- maybe they are and maybe they aren’t but the endorsement signs I can see driving up & down the road are no questions about it lies so I’m gonna vote Bane.

Vote for whoever you want, but you are wrong regarding the uniformed personnel of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. All of the uniformed officers are sworn Deputy Sheriff’s. Some have law enforcement certifications and some have correctional certifications, but they are, each and everyone of them, Deputies.
Ask a Correctional Officer to show you his issued ID card. They are Deputy Sheriffs. They are sworn in and issued ID cards. Gahler’s signs are correct. I guess the Correctional Officers are just tired of being crapped on my Bane and his minions. 80% support him and only 53 % of the other Union support him with a large majority not even voting to endorse him. A good Sheriff would get both Unions with an overwhelming support. Not a good showing for Bane.

You would be surprised at how many live out of county with several living in Pennsylvania. As more and more taxes and fees go up in Maryland you will see more Deputies move to Pennsylvania.

Morale is low. Detention Center is in a mess. Three years to search for an experienced Corrections Warden and the list goes on. Oh yeah, and was made to hire back a female deputy he fired for vindictive reasons. The best is the Union who backs the proven liar and gives him money.

Union Leader above is not a leader of any Union associated with the sheriffs office. Many of the comments above were posted by the same individual under multiple screen names to full the readers of the dagger into believing that there are members of the LE community to honestly support Bane for doing a good job. Every member of the HCDSU that I have spoken to gave me the same exact reason as if it were rehearsed ” at least with Bane we know what we are getting” or “Id take a known evil over an unknown” How brave of them and how American of them to accept miserable conditions out of fear and not even be willing to take a chance at having strong leadership. I’m proud to have been a part of the HCCA being able to do what the HCDSU wishes it had the backbone to do.
