Darlington Apple Festival on Saturday, October 4, 2014
The 2014 Darlington Apple Festival “Apple of Our Eye” Award goes to the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company
The Darlington Volunteer Fire Company has proudly been serving the local community since 1949. Over the years, equipment has changed and been upgraded. The latest Advanced Life Support equipment is now available to our citizens 24/7. Firefighting and rescue has improved and changed as well. Training, equipment and quick response keep the firefighters on their toes. However, the one thing that has not, and never will change is that the Darlington firefighters are simply neighbors helping neighbors. It’s that simple. And it is a proud tradition. In looking forward to the future, the Darlington firefighters are planning for the best practices in technology, recruiting and use of funds. The Darlington Volunteer Fire Company is thankful for this very prestigious award. They say, “Thank you from the apple of our heart!”
If you plan to attend: Please remember to bring a non-perishable food item. There will be shopping carts at all the parking areas and at the top of Shuresville road. The parking situation has changed for this year. Please consult the parking map on the NEW website www.darlingtonapplefestival.com. Also, remember that pets are not allowed at the Apple Festival due to insurance restrictions.

YOU ARE INVITED
You may have already heard through the Darlington grapevine that Marthea Proudfoot, Executive Director of the Wilson Ministry Center, is retiring. The Darlington Apple Festival will be her last day. So be sure to stop by for an Apple Delite at the Wilson booth and wish her well.
Marthea says that she was hired in October 2002 and has seen many changes over the past 12 years. “During my time at WMC, numerous programs have come and gone that served needs in the community at that time.
I see the Center as the ‘go to’ place in our community for programs, services and resource information for our local residents. Although the programs may change, the focus is the same, serving the community!”
When asked about her favorite thing to do, she answered, “I enjoy working with people of all ages, solving problems, developing new programs and seeking funding support that benefits the community.”
Her favorite memories? “I have many fond memories. Some of the highlights would include the Christmas concerts with the Wilson Children’s Chorus and a variety of other performers. I also enjoyed coordinating the food drops and seeing the number of clients served increase over time. And of course, peeling hundreds of apples over the years at the Apple Delite booth during the Apple Festival!”
She talked about her most significant accomplishments: 1) The Before/After School Program is operating almost at capacity and is financially sustainable after serving the community for almost 20 years. 2) Following several years of startup planning and laying the groundwork, the Getting There Ride Share program is thriving and now serves over 50 local seniors! 3) Helping to establish the food distribution programs and community meals that serve our local low-income residents.
Marthea will now be working just one part-time job and plans to fill her “spare” time with more musical activities and volunteering. She sees the Wilson Center as a church without doors that is open to everyone. Its purpose is to serve the community. She will be missed.
The Wilson Center celebrates the leadership of Marthea Proudfoot, Executive Director, and Joe and Joanne Coale, treasurer and property manager, and wishes them all the best in their retirements and new ventures ahead.
