Aberdeen, Md. – The Baltimore Orioles and the Aberdeen IronBirds today announced a two-year Player Development Contract (PDC) extension, keeping the club’s Class ‘A’ short season affiliate in Aberdeen, Maryland through the 2016 season. The IronBirds have been affiliated with the Orioles organization since it opened its front gates at Ripken Stadium in 2002.
“The IronBirds are proud to continue our partnership with the Baltimore Orioles,” said Joe Harrington, Aberdeen IronBirds general manager. “With the enhancements we’ve made to Ripken Stadium to the changes we’ve done to our uniforms, we feel that Birdland truly begins in Aberdeen.”
Current Orioles that once dawned an IronBirds uniform include Nick Markakis, Manny Machado, Zach Britton, Caleb Joseph, and Jonathan Schoop.
The IronBirds have participated in their post-season play in 2013 when they clinched the McNamara Division title. They will also play host to the 2015 New York-Penn League All-Star Game at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, next season. This will be the second time IronBirds have hosted the game. In 2006, over 6,900 fans came through the gates in the ‘Birds first All-Star Game at Ripken Stadium.
The Orioles also announced extensions for four other minor league affiliates, including Triple-A Norfolk Tides, Double-A Bowie Baysox, Advanced-A Frederick Keys and Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds.
