From Del. Mary-Dulany James:
I was recently given a tour by Dr. Dennis Golladay (President of HCC), Annette Haggray (VP of Academic Affairs), Brenda Morrison (VP, marketing, development, and community relations), Steve Garey (Interim Associate VP for Campus operations) of the newly constructed Darlington Hall at Harford Community College. This beautiful building is still under construction and Harford Community College is hoping to finish it in the next 60 days. The 3 story building has one floor for allied health and one floor for credit (RN program).
The nursing program hopes to graduate 250 nurses per year through 3 program options including the normal course load, the weekend course load, and the accelerated program. The allied health programs include: phlebotomy, CNA, EMT Medical transcripts, Electronic records, Paramedic and Medical Assisting.
I am especially proud of this building because it facilitates all nursing and allied health students will be under one roof to learn from one another and from new technology such as iPad technology sponsored by CareFirst through a grant; new projectors and boards to replace chalkboards and dry erase.
The new building is primarily funded by $11 million dollars allocated for Harford Community College through the FY15 operating budget, an increase of $690,000 or 6.3%. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I was able to secure this important funding, helping Harford Community College provide the lowest cost tuition of any higher education institution in Maryland.
Harford Community College has used the funding to invest in the community by creating jobs, e.g. hiring construction crews to build the new Darlington Hall for nursing and allied health, as well as hiring professors and administrators.
The health professionals that will come out of this program represent a huge boast to our community and Maryland as a whole.
Have a great day,
MDJ
