A bull rider was airlifted from the Harford County Farm Fair Sunday after being trampled by a bull during a rodeo, according to local EMS officials.
The injury occurred at approximately 3 p.m., according to a social media posting by the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association, when the rider was stepped on by a bull and suffered severe facial injuries. The rider was taken by medevac to a regional trauma center, where he was listed in serious condition Sunday afternoon.
By Monday morning, he had been upgraded to stable condition, according to the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, which cited Farm Fair officials. The man suffered a broken jaw and broken sternum, they reported.
The incident marred the farm fair’s rodeo event, scheduled for 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday and organized by 3S Bucking Bulls of York, Pa.

I’m sad that someone got hurt this badly, and feeling angry that more people aren’t upset by rodeos. Rodeos are nothing more than animal cruelty with huge potential for injury to the people and animals in them. I hope that Farm Fair officials will consider eliminating rodeos. I feel for the poor children who had to see this horrific thing happen.

I disagree, accidents like this, while tragic, are good teaching moments for children: Don’t mess around with animals bigger than you, especially bulls.
Other rodeo activities are good tests of skill and a way for farmers to show off, such as calf roping, and others are good laughs like mutton busting.
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association publishes rules to ensure that events are carried out without cruelty or undue injury to the animals.

I’d rather be a rodeo bull than an 2 year old angus steer any day and that’s not to say either is wrong necessarily as long as the treatment isn’t exploitive and cruel beyond reason. Way I see it raising rodeo animals is another way to save a farm. There’s a world of difference between wildlife and domestics and humans have used domestics for centuries. I would bet you the rodeo bulls go back to the farm and munch on grass most of the time except for the occasional trip to the ring that pays thier way, but they do get to go back home…Mr. Angus only takes one trip off the farm and doesn’t come back. What would you rather be?

If someone made that guy get on a bull, you’d have a point.

a bit off topic, but relates to the Farm Fair…this year I didn’t hear the blasting of the tractor pulls…not sure if they had them, or there may have been too many leaves on the trees for the sound to carry. in past years, I could hear them at my home, near Leeswood…reckon as the crow flies its maybe 2 miles to the Fairgrounds…
no sounds this year…

I’m very sorry to hear about the rodeo incident. I know the fair organizers put in lots of volunteer hours trying to keep the fair going. It wasn’t too long ago it was in jeopardy of ending. They’ve added some carnival rides, a talent show, and now they’ve tried the rodeo. Not sure where they’ll go from here, but I personally appreciate all the hard work in keeping a tradition alive and providing a family friendly event. Those ticket sales people, parking people, contest judges, and others? All volunteers!
And yes, the tractor pulls took place, loud as ever. There was a Boy Scout troop selling the usual: food, drinks, and ear plugs! 🙂

Pulls were rained out Friday night but went on without any issues on Saturday evening. Great show, and as always, draws the most people watching than anything else at that fair.

I was there and it was horrible. Jesse Bane pushed him directly in front of that bull.

Teaching moment for children is right: Don’t torture animals for your own or others amusement. As for the PRCA’s rules: Without cruelty or undue injury to animals? Can you not see the inherent absurdity of that statement?
Kharn says
Would you care to identify rodeo activities that routinely and intentionally cause injury to livestock requiring veterinary care?
Farmers and ranchers have a vested interest in the health of their herd, injured animals do not produce milk, do not gain muscle mass, sell for a lower price (if at all), require expensive medical care, and/or must be destroyed.

Don’t mess with the bull!! this barbaric practice is cruel punishment but in this case the fellow had it brunt of it. Good for the bull and too bad for the faceless dumb ass.
D J Frucks says
rodeos make money from the suffering inflicted upon the bulls and other animals used in their shows. They don’t try to hurt the animals for pleasure but they do get hurt in unneeded physical activity. Just shut the whole thing down, they aren’t any better than bull fighting, cock gaming or dog fighting. It should all be outlawed. I cheer when the human gets the ultimate got cha!

…and don’t forget about the frogs. There was a lot of controversy about the frog races. Why do we need all this stuff? I say leave the animals be.
