From the Bel Air Independence Day Committee:
The winners of the top awards from the 2014 Bel Air Independence Day Parade accepted their honors in a brief ceremony on the steps of Bel Air Town Hall on July 29.
For having the best float in the parade, Central Christian Church received a check for $400 and will be receiving a plaque.
“Their dynamic entry featured a three-tiered, red white and blue cake bearing the number 200, plus rockets and other appropriate artwork,” says Michael Blum, Chairman of the 2014 Parade. “So, the judges deemed Central Christian the best in the parade at illustrating this year’s theme — ‘200 Star Spangled Years!’, he adds. Central Christian Church meets in the Bel Air Armory with services at 9:30 am and 11 am each Sunday. “Church members also provided free face painting for the crowds in Shamrock Park on the 4th of July,” says Don Stewart, President of the Bel Air Independence Day Committee, which produces the day-long patriotic celebration each July 4 in Bel Air, “so you could tell they were really into the event!” Stewart adds.
Six years ago, an award was created to honor the best Harford County High School Band in the Bel Air July 4th parade. Each year’s winner gets a plate on the permanent trophy, and gets to keep the trophy for the entire year (somewhat like the Stanley Cup). The first winner was Havre de Grace High School, but for 2014 and for a fifth straight year, the winner was the C. Milton Wright High School Marching Mustang Band, under the direction of Mary Lynn Twentey and Brandon Bickham.
The Bel Air July 4th Parade is judged by a panel of independent judges, who grade parade participants on their consistency with the theme of the parade, as well as their enthusiasm, creativity and style. The full list of parade winners and prizes won is published on the Committee’s web site at http://belairjuly4.org. The committee has contacted all winners directly to inform them of their honor.
