From Harford County Public Schools:
As part of the HCPS Custodial Training Program, the Facilities Management Department conducts bi-annual inspections of each of the 54 schools. These inspections are conducted in the fall and spring of each school year, with one being an announced inspection and the other being a “surprise,” unannounced inspection. Inspections are conducted by the custodial training coordinator. Awards are presented to the top five scoring schools, and winners are recognized at the annual custodial luncheon and a Board of Education meeting.
The inspection process is an intense walk-thru of all areas of each building. Interior areas inspected include, but are not limited to, interior lobbies, stairwells, windows and horizontal ledges, gym bleachers, mechanical plants, classrooms, restroom sanitation, floor machines, custodial closets, water coolers, and boiler preventive maintenance sheets. Exterior grounds, sidewalks, and playgrounds are evaluated as well. Points are awarded based not only on surface cleanliness, but also on obvious build-up of dirt over an extended period of time. Tabulation of points earned occurs at the end of all inspections. This year’s winners are:
-Darlington Elementary
-Dublin Elementary
-Forest Lakes Elementary
-Jarrettsville Elementary
-Red Pump Elementary
We congratulate the winning schools for their continued hard work to keep our buildings in tip-top-top shape and for their contribution to the overall success of our school system.
In addition, several facilities employees earned their 4th Grade Stationary Engineers License, including: Henry Swincki, Steven Campbell, Terri Zell, Jason French and Mike McKelvey. And, Ron McLaughlin obtained his 2nd Grade Stationary Engineers License. Job well done to these employees.

To bad it wasn’t like it has been in previous years . Where schools from different levels recieved awards. Elementary, Middle and High. Lets alienate the levels of schools and cause strife in the ranks.

I dont know why I received thumbs down…I am a custodian for the schools, an I know of three schools that had perfect scores that weren’t recognized.

I agree. Maybe secondary schools suffered because they have to send their staff to elementary schools when they are short on staff. Then the secondary schools don’t have full staffs., so I guess they don’t get things done. When custodians are out for extended time, they don’t get substitutes. Figure that out! Doesn’t make sense.

Theese folks work very very hard all school year for very little money, very little respect, my hat goes off to the schools who won awards and for all of those who work day in and day out to keep our Childern safe. Congrats to anyone who has achieved their stationary engineers license, this is a big step and big responsibility, hopefully their will be some salary increases with the increasing task of safety, and risk and responsibility that goes along with the license. Thanks to all of the custodial crews.
yme? says
Why not also recognize the dirtiest most disgusting schools, too?
Lets be honest here, there are plenty of them and plenty of custodians who don’t do a damn thing!
Oh, and how about these” professionals” actually wear the uniform. Not tank tops, shorts, cut off fleece shirts and leggings?!?
WTF says
Good one, buddy.
Maybe there should be an award’s given out to people who work in HCPS administrative positions.
It could be like… The award for getting the most money and doing the least amount of work goes to _________.
Why the school needs so many goofy, well paid, do nothing but fart all day job titles is beyond me. Help me out?

I almost spit my drink out reading this post! Flannel shirts and leggings – coupled with dingy flip-flops and a look of disgust when receiving an award?!?! hahahahaha
What is this crap about “saftey” of our children? Since when were custodial workers charged with the “safety of kids in the schools?” Maybe “safety” meaning keep the mold and mildew out of the bathrooms, clean and sanitized desks and lunch tables? Bleached toilets to kill all the cooties? I guess the author was trying to convey that Stationary Engineers relate to something professional? The gist of the “certification” is knowing how to “operate selected machinery and equipment properly”. It should be made clear that Stationary engineering is not within the scope of Professional Engineering.
Where are the awards for “Best School Lunch”?
B1tchiest Front Office Secretary?
Hottest Teacher?
Pick out the guilty one says
Granted, it looks like a line up to determine which one boosted the Mountain Dew. But you have to respect those folks. You can imagine how everyone, including the students, probably looks down on them while they are doing their job. Honest day’s work for honest day’s pay. Can’t say that for everyone
