Harford County Executive David R. Craig is seeking the Republican nomination in this year’s gubernatorial primary election, which is now just days away on Tuesday, June 24. The Republican primary winner will face the Democratic nominee in November.
Within the GOP field, Craig is running against state Del. Ron George, a small business owner from Anne Arundel County; Larry Hogan, a businessman, activist, and former state cabinet secretary, also of Anne Arundel County; and Charles Lollar, a Marine and businessman living in Charles County.
As Republicans statewide choose their nominee, will a majority of those in Harford County, who presumably know him best, choose David Craig to represent their party in the race for governor?
The question is ridiculous. Harford County comprises 9% of the Baltimore Metro Area and about 4% of the state population. It’s a weak building block to a successful state-wide campaign. Ehrlich overwhelmingly carried this county against O’Malley both times they ran against each other — didn’t do him much good, did it? The question shouldn’t be whether Craig will carry Harford (which he most certainly will, and should, in a Republican primary), but to what extent he can carry ANYWHERE ELSE?

Craig basically ran unopposed just third party opposition. He barely won the first time he ran and lost his own town’s vote.

You can’t run as a fiscal conservative by claiming you kept the county budget low without raising taxes because you refuse to fund the pay plans that you agreed to fund while also throwing money at developers and pushing your personal pork barrel projects that were a total waste of taxpayer money.

Craig has systematically demoralized the people who have dedicated their lives to making Harford County a wonderful place to live. He has used them and abused them to his own end while funneling the money that was rightfully owed to them in the form of raises into his own pet projects in his own community. As far as I can tell, the only GOP candidate whose campaign has attempted to lure the necessary moderates to win a general election is Charles Lollar. Well watching the debates Lollar impresses me the most. Craig boasts on his political offices he has held. Now as another election draws near he once again is a conservative and not the RINO (republican in name only) he really is. Lollar is the candidate I wish everyone would just take the time to look at. Between Craig and Brown……. “what difference does it make.”
Interesting that Candidate for CE, Glass hasn’t made any statements or brought any vision of what he wants to achieve for the next 4 years. I think the guy may be more dangerous than Craig ever was. At least as an executive one can determine a person’s past record but this guy has been a legislator only and hasn’t prepped a budget or has made a management decision in his life in government.
Following that logic, if you have never prepared a budget in government before becoming County Executive, then only the three town mayors would be eligible to run…. A small county like Harford, anyone with good budget skill should be able to deal with our budget, including from private enterprise.

All you have to remember is that during the last election there were signs all over Harford County with Craig and Bane on the same sign. Craig will do anything to win. Even ride on the back of the worst Sheriff in county history. That was not being bipartisan, that was called win at any cost.

County employees are looking forward to him. Craig’s risk manager Rocky Gonzalez has hired his mother and law and both daughters as part of Craig’s friends and family network. I hope not. Craig has done enough damage in Harford County. I don’t think he was a very good county executive. In our new Governor, I am looking for someone who is intelligent, experienced, emotionally mature and highly ethical. We haven’t had true leadership in Maryland or on a local level for a very long time. I am cautiously optimistic with the current candidates.
