The Burger King restaurant at the intersection of Mountain Road and Route 1 sustained more than a half-million dollars in damages in a Sunday morning blaze, fire officials said.
The fire at the restaurant, located in the 300 block of Mountain Road, was discovered in the venting system above the broiler in the kitchen at approximately 8:41 a.m., according to a statement from the Office of the State Fire Marshal. A total of 40 firefighters from the Fallston, Bel Air, Joppa-Magnolia, Abingdon, and Kingsville fire companies responded and brought the blaze under control in approximately 20 minutes. The restaurant was open at the time, and all workers evacuated without incident or injuries.
Damage to the structure is estimated at $350,000, and damages to its contents were estimated at $250,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, fire officials said, but grease build-up inside in venting system or the presence of a combustible too close to a heat source remain possibilities.
