From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:
At approximately 11:40am today, Harford County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 report of a vehicle that had struck a home in the 1900 block Brookside Drive on Edgewood. Upon arriving deputies found a non-responsive male in the driver’s seat of a Ford Explorer. The vehicle had struck and damaged the left front corner of the townhome.
Deputies also observed the residential gas service line had been severed spewing natural gas into the surrounding area, the car’s engine was still racing, and a fire had started beneath the vehicle. Deputies entered the car quickly rescuing the driver and moving him to safety. Back-up deputies then began evacuating residents from nearby homes.
Fire and EMS units from the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company responded and secured the scene and treated Samuel O’Neill Dowling, 42, of the 1000 block of Waterside Court.
Police believe Mr. Dowling suffered a medical emergency as he was leaving his home causing him to lose control of the vehicle. He was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for treatment.
The occupant of the residence, whose identity has not been confirmed, was not home at the time of the crash. Brookside Drive is a town home community and several adjoining homes had to be evacuated and their residents temporarily displaced while BGE mitigated the leak.
