Harford County Public Schools is CLOSED today, Wednesday, January 29. Employees CODE BLUE.
Per the Board-approved calendar for this school year, as of today, the last day of school for students (K-11) is Friday, June 13, and for Pre-K students the last day is June 11. As an employee, should you have questions regarding your work schedule, please contact your immediate supervisor. Below is the sequentially ordered list of make-up days to be used. Dates with a line through them below are dates identified as inclement weather make-up days that have been used and will now be dates when schools are in session.

4. Friday, June 13
5. Monday, April 14
6. Tuesday, April 15
7. Wednesday, April 16
We have two inclement weather make-up dates remaining. We will continue to provide updates as needed. Waivers for days used must be granted by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and are not automatic regardless of ‘State of Emergency’ status as declared by the Governor during an inclement weather event. Please note that waivers will not be considered by MSDE until the end of snow/inclement weather season.
Too Bad, taking my kids on spring break. Why don’t you cut out some of the teacher “planning” days that so conviently bump up against weekends and holidays. GET REAL! Carroll county has it right, after eating into the end of year makeup days they start cutting teacher planning days before spring break. What a joke, most other counties are 2-hour delay and Harford cancels
April 14 and 15 are teacher professional development days that are also potential make-up days. Only April 16 is the only potential make-up day that schools are closed for both staff and students.

They were supposed to be PD days, but the board gave teachers the days off as compensation for not receiving the contracted step increase for the third year in a row. The days were scheduled as potential make- up days before the board decided to give teachers those two days off as well.
Ohh yeahhhh!!! Who is taking bets schools will close because its “too hot” when they are making up days in the midde of June?
Maybe open weekends for school, or close school in the winter and go all summer! Ohhhh yeah!!!!!!
Harford County DPW never went out in the morning to treat any back roads so Harford County had no choice but to cancel. I think it was more an ooops on their part than anything else.
I saw a few trucks spreading salt, even saw a HCPS dump truck with a plow.
People would complain about their “tax dollars” if thousands of workers were out in 1/2 inch of snow.
Kind of like how people complain when school is off, or they complain when school is late.
Deal with it, time to move on with life to the next day.
There should be no penalty for something as unpredictable as weather. Eliminate ‘snow days’, and folks don’t have to worry about changing the school calendar. The amount of teachers and students missing on April 14 will be comical.
Really, off again? I got up at 5:30 this morning and drove halfway across the State with no problems. Every jurisdiction I drove through had the same amount of snow or more. They all went to school today. Everybody except Harford County. So what is so special about this county that we never go to school when everyone around us in MD and PA did go. Do they realize we are not even into the heaviest snow month of February. These kids will be going all summer. Days like today and the last “it’s too cold” day they had off, they should have went to school.
When you drove halfway across the state, did you go into developments. They weren’t touched and that is where the buses travel. As far as the “it’s too cold” day, some students are at their bus stops before the sun comes up. According to the news, those temperatures were quite dangerous.
A lot of “developments” are maintained by the HOA. I see people (mostly women) always complaining about sidewalks in the hood not being shoveled.
Talk with your lame ass HOA why they pay Bubba Ray Smith $20 to do quick pass with the snowplow every 3 hours versus having actual decent company that offers snow removal and management
Or, grab a shovel. No one says yo aren’t allowed to remove snow, if you are concerned for the children then you put out the labor for their safety of walking on the sidewalks.

As a matter of fact, I did. I took many back roads to get to the interstate and then many back roads when I got to my destination. (Their snow was much more than ours). Their buses looked a lot like our buses except their buses were taking kids to school. I am sorry, the day they didn’t go to school it was 1 degree when I left for work. On other days when they did go to school, it was between 5-9 degrees when I left for work at the same time. What’s the difference. That difference in temp. is irrelevant. I don’t think folks understand the magnitude of the problems created when you are the only jurisdiction that doesn’t go to school on a day when you could have went 2 hours late. We haven’t hit February yet. If there is no State of Emergency, do you have nay idea how many more days these kids might be going to school?

Don’t you just love how when people are wrong, they resort to name calling. There is nothing that says school won’t go past 6/13. Wait until we have a big storm next month and school closes for a week.

June 13 may have meant “past” rather than passed if you axe me.

Looks like June 13 is the numb nuts now. They will be looking at June 19 as the final day if school closings continue.
June 19 is the last possible day of school for the 2014-2015 school year. There has been no discussion of extending the current school year past June 13.

Diesel fuel has been for a few months now treated with “winter blend,” anti-gel additives are already in the fuel in the tanks at the pumps, and where everyone gets fuel delivered to.
Lack of maintenance, such as water in the fuel, such as not draining fuel filter(s), such as not keeping up with fuel filter maintenance, the water will freeze when the engine has not been running, then fuel cannot get past the plugged filter and especially as the temperature gets more and more cold (You’re probably smart enough to realize that).
The upside is most diesel engines an electric element in the fuel filter housing that heats up when the ignition is switched “On,” however, it’s not totally 100% to get fuel flowing in the filter… also, when a modern diesel engine is running, there is no doubt a factory return fuel line to the fuel tank, so the warm fuel will definitely mix with more “cold” fuel. Not really an issue there.
Other items that may lack of maintenance, batteries, glow plugs or heating grid, coolant, oil, all things related to attempt a start of a modern diesel engine.
Most school busses in this county are pretty “modern” as in, not very “old.”
I drove past a school bus lot and noticed the hood popped on a bus, and a pickup truck. Which I assume was attempting to lend it’s electrical power to help crank over the bus, I seriously hope this was “One of them days” or the such and not a lack of care because the prior 5 days, they had plenty of time in cold weather (No School/Holiday) before they needed to make sure the Busses would start in the single digits.
The day we had off Anne Arundel went on time and had kids sitting for an hour at bus stops due to bus issues with temperatures!
So? Why do I care? I’m not a school bus mechanic. It is what it is, and if there is sub-par and low ambition on the maintenance, then this is what happens, busses on the shoulder with their hazard lights flashing. I shrug my shoulders, what do you want me to do? It doesn’t effect me. Also… “Sh1t happens,” and that doesn’t exclude busses.
Complain to the school system to be more pro-active with fleet maintenance?
The bulk of the buses are contracted out!
Cdev, are you trolling now? Last time I checked, the busses still say “Harford County Public School” on the side, followed usually by the Private Contractor’s name in smaller letters somewhere along the side.
If one (parent/guardian) was to complain about bus service, they would first go to the school system. Someone (Local government) obviously pays the contractors that bling, bling as they say.
I agree with Reality – I drove across the Northern part of the County (Rt. 24 & 165) and they were perfectly fine. The county roads were awful and I would not have wanted to drive a school bus on them. Closing schools was the correct call based on the condition of the county roads.
Some people are not differentiating between state maintained roads which have been taken good care of during these snows and county roads which have been neglected. If DPW got up and started treating when the snow stopped this time we would have had school on a 2 hour delay.
Lol people will complain no matter what happen. There are far bigger fish to fry.
If harford county used private contractors like baltimore county does to clear the roads there wouldn’t have been an issue. Instead we use all government employees and frankly I’m not busting my ass to get less overtime.
Uh James, Harford County does use private contractors. Open your eyes the next snow. The snow plows you see with private company names on the trucks are private contractors being paid by the county.

I’ll retract my above statement, its the State who uses contractors not Harford County, my mistake.
Harford county uses contractors for snow removal I have been on snow removal 25 years for the county.
There have been many years that the school used all of the scheduled snow days. The kids never went past the last day on the original calendar. They just applied for a waiver and it was granted.
The last possible student is June 13th and will not be moved back for any reason. Any snow days that go beyond the last 2 make up days will be waived by MSDE as they have in previous years. Stop whining about schools closing, road conditions, and the like. Get over it.
How do you know it won’t be moved back? I heard if I like my health insurance plan, I could keep it.
