The Harford Tech Cobras kept pace with the Bel Air Bobcats in the Susquehanna Division after a thrilling, last-second 54-51 victory over the visiting Rising Sun Tigers. Darius Dangerfield scored 20 points, but none more crucial than the four free throws he hit in the final 45 seconds to lift his squad to victory.
The game got off to a bit of a sloppy start, as it was just 9-7 in favor of the Cobras after one quarter. However, Rising Sun came out charging in the second, as Randy Rash scored six points in the quarter, helping his team to a small lead. The Cobras, however, were up by four, 21-17, with just over a minute left until halftime. The Tigers were able to flip that four point deficit into a one point halftime lead at 22-21, and had momentum on their side.
The Tigers lead throughout the second half, as Tech couldn’t get closer than three. The Tigers led by six, 39-33, after three quarters thanks in large part to Brandon Aro’s five made free throws in the quarter, along with three pointers from Nick Luciano and Jesse Shields.
The Tigers lead was at least two possessions for most of the fourth quarter, but the Cobra defense created turnovers late and, along with some Tiger fouls, gave Tech a chance to cash in at the free throw line. With 50 seconds left and the Tigers up by just one, Rising Sun had the ball, but a sloppy offensive set created a turnover. Darius Dangerfield was fouled on the ensuing Tech possession, and his two free throw makes gave the Cobras a 51-50 lead they would not relinquish. Tyler Mister also hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to help seal the win. The Tigers had a chance for a half-court shot in the final seconds, but were unable to get it off.
Harford Tech improves to 3-2 in the Susquehanna Division, while Rising Sun fell to 0-6 in conference play.
