The James R. Harris Stadium at Havre de Grace High School was built to honor a former student (Class of 1961), teacher, coach and athletic director. Jim Harris began his teaching career in 1965 at North Harford High School before coming to Havre de Grace in 1967. He taught for 28 years. He coached for 27 of those years winning a football district championship in 1973 and a football state championship in 1978. He also started the girl’s lacrosse program in 1979. Unfortunately for this close knit community, Jim’s life was cut short in 1993 when he passed away at the age of young age of 50 to brain cancer. For his outstanding contributions and tireless dedication to his students, colleagues and his community as a teacher, work experience coordinator, coach and athletic director, he was inducted into the Harford County Public School Educator’s Hall of Fame in 2005. For those that remember Jim, his dedication, loyalty and sense of community truly reflect our school’s motto: “Enter to Learn; Leave to Serve.”
Our Board of Directors would like to thank all those who already purchased a brick for their help in making the stadium happen and for their patience in the fact that it took longer to come to fruition than we originally planned.
