From the office of U.S. Rep Andy Harris:
“While the House waits for the Senate and President to agree to start the negotiations necessary to end the partial shutdown, the House will continue to attempt to end the special treatment of big businesses and members of Congress and their staff under Obamacare. We will also act on a daily basis to deal with any issues that arise by restoring temporary funding to parts of the government that were inappropriately shut down by the President. Today we dealt with two such issues – restoring funding for the Veterans Administration handling of disability claims, and for re-opening of national parks such as the World War II Memorial. This continues the action we took last week, agreed to by the Senate and the President, to make certain that our troops receive their pay.”
BillH says
Well Andy it’s good to know your doing nothing is continuing to help in nothing.
Enjoy your last term in an elected office.
Ralph says
“Enjoy your last term in an elected office.”
You may want to begin campaigning on the entire eastern shore. They love Harris over there, and as long as he is representing their views his chances of being reelected are very good. Only a portion of Harford, Baltimore, and Anne Arundel Counties are included in Harris’ district along with the entire eastern shore.
I have a second home in west ocean city area. I can assure you that the permanent residents over there love Harris. Eastern shore folks could care less about federal shutdowns.

Cdev says
Keep in mind he is not a shore native and the shore will turn on him when conronted with a shore native who shares their values!
Ralph says
Probably correct. Those values will still be exactly those now held by Harris. Other than a different person in office, their actions in congress will be the same as Harris. Kratvoil thought he could remain in office because he was from the eastern shore and as long as he voted “for the most part” in concert with their views. He was wrong. The eastern shore is very conservative.
Cdev says
Not really as conservative as you think. They are on social issues but they trend very moderate. Gilchrest was a moderate and got along great. Kratovil actually voted against the ACA he was painted as being for it by Andy Harris and his carpet bag club for growth. I think a moderate Eastern Shore NAtive of either party can trounce him. It wont be someone like his last opponent.
Ralph says
Yes Kratovil voted against the ACA in an effort to save his seat. The eastern shore folks knew exactly why he voted against it. It was not his actions regarding ACA that got him unseated. It was his overall voting record. You can be a Democrat and get elected from the eastern shore, however, your voting record needs to be on the conservative side to remain in office.

Is this dude for real? your party shot the govt down because you don’t like the laws passed by Congress and ratified by the Supreme Court. Now, you guys want to exclude some preferred groups from having the same pain that we have to go through because you can’t accept the law of the land? What a bunch of morons these republicant’s happen to be. Keep doing what you do and see less of you elected the next time around. Let’s protect medical device makers and cut food stamps from children. we see perfectly clear where your priorities are at this point, not that any remainders were needed. Andy you need to shut your pay hole and return your check to Treasury as you will still get your check and your insurance won’t lapse.
Cdev says
Actually Andy has to get his insurance through the exchanges. Lucky for him he is from Maryland which has many choices on the exchange. His buddies from Texas though will have no insurance on January 1st because their state has opted to have no exchanges and not expand medicaid.

The sad thing is, the Teapublicons will turn out in force. What none of them realize is that when you break the bond between the employee needing healthcare from the company who provides it, you have no reason to “hold” any employee who wants to start a business. I started mine and gave a up a great job with bennies and took the plunge, but it took me years to work up the money and courage to go it alone. If I had to pay for it myself (which I do now that I am established) earlier, I could have been doing this for 25 years instead of 10, made myself wealthy and hired more people. Employers don’t give a rats butt about loyalty but do hold that magic wand of sponsored health care. Expect within a decade major shifts in employment as those held back by a jobs health care for their spouse/kids can now freely work how they want. Isn’t independence, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and working hard what conservatives SAY what they want? Break your chains, big business will soon realize it has some mighty big competition coming up. Bring it on! Andy, you’re a Luddite and corporate shill beholden to extremists. Change or get out of the way for the new world!
Common Sense says
The President wanted the shutdown and he got it.
Cdev says
No he wanted a clean CR. Something that the House wont vote on. At this point we should take a page from Paul Ryan and pass a clean CR and a debt cieling increase.
Cdev says
Didn’t the GOP promise to stop bundeling bills together when they took over?
Common Sense says
The President needed to have a political advantage over the Republicans to distract people from his failing economic and international policies.
The President wanted to shut down the government so he could benefit politically. In the short-term he will. In the long-term it remains to be seen.
The President doesn’t want people to focus on the launch failures of ACA Exchanges. Which are more than computer glitches. The exchange insurance pricing is flawed, data security & protection from identity theft is not assured and applicant fraud is not being checked.
Cdev says
Talking points!!!!
The GOP would have leverage had they actually been working on funding bills all summer. They demanded a budget and than Ted Cruz filibustered the appointment of conferees. So much for the demand for a return to regular order. The president said in July he would not negotiate on a CR or the debt ceiling. The current CR is a compromise as it is less money than the Ryan Budget was! If the GOP wants to fix the ACA than that should be done seperately. Unemployment has been going down at about the same rate it did for Reagan. Markets are improving! The sad thing is a clean CR would pass the house easy!!!! a part of the GOP doesn’t want to vote on it without taking hostages!
B says
This is the first time I have felt that you have been flat out dishonest.
Unemployment going down the same as Reagan? Dropping workers from the count doesn’t decrease unemployment. Even the NYT is questioning the administrations job creation numbers. And let’s not forget the Obama is still greasing wall street to the tune of billions each month to maintain this fictional recovery.
What percentage of Obama jobs are full time?
Reagan created years of prosperity, Obama, staggering debt and terrible inflation In the near future.

Reagan created no prosperity, he created debt through voodoo and supply side economics. Before insulting us with your lack of knowledgeable history at least do a minimum of research.

Word on the street says
Mr. Harris and his republican friends need to stop whining like little kids. You lost in 2008, 2012, the Supreme Court ratified the ACA and you lost again over 40 times, now it time to move on and do their job and stop being the party of no. The American people have spoken move on.
Paul Mc says
Part of their job is the funding. So, as they won the seats to control they House, they now control a major aspect of the funding. As such, they can choose to do, just as the Democrats have done in the past, what they think is best; including not funding an act.
That is the way of our government; a system of checks and balances.
And, you are correct, the American people have spoken. They spoke loudly when the elected a majority of Republicans into the House, allowing this to occur.
Cdev says
First they do not decide on all funding it just must originate with them. They need the Senate and President to concur. Second if it is their job to appropriate it why are they always waiting to the last minute.
The problem is the GOP is not all on the same page the TEA Party and the rest of the GOP no longer have aligned beliefs. The TEA Party, which is not the majority of America, has the rest of the GOP by the cajones.
Paul Mc says
First, yes. However, the president and senate must agree with them. If they don’t agree, there is no funding. So, like I said, it is a system of checks and balances.
Second, with trillions of dollars in debt, it is unlikely funding could be obtained any earlier.
The problem is that the parties, the GOP, the Tea Party, the Democrats, the Green, the Libertarians, etc, do NOT work together.
The problem is that instead of working together and compromising, they all stand firm and this happens. Perhaps instead of passing the bill without input from the other side when there was a super majority, they could have talked to the opposition party. Now, it seems like they reap what they sow.
Cdev says
They don’t have to agree and if they don’t they need to find a compromise. Input was solicited from the GOP on the ACA. Whenever one of them would schedule a meeting like Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins etc…. They got roasted publicly and canceled. Essentially they didn’t want input in the process. Here we are two years later it is law. This is not a fight ovver the ACA. This is the budget and the house GOP will not let a clean CR get a vote!!!!!
Paul Mc says
“They don’t have to agree and if they don’t they need to find a compromise.” – They have to agree to a budget.
“Input was solicited from the GOP on the ACA.” – If by input you mean do it our way, then yes.
“Whenever one of them would schedule a meeting like Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins etc…. They got roasted publicly and canceled.” – Some did, but again, they didn’t want input.
“Essentially they didn’t want input in the process.” – Exactly, the Democrats didn’t want any input from the Republicans.
“Here we are two years later it is law.” – Agreed.
“This is not a fight ovver the ACA. This is the budget and the house GOP will not let a clean CR get a vote!!!!!” – Again, congress controls the budget, including funding the ACA. Sorry you don’t like the way things work when your party is in the minority.
Cdev says
No the GOP didn’t want to give input when they where asked.
Second the ACA is funded hence the GOP trying to defund it after the fact. The money has been appropriated hence the reason things are running without violating the Anti-deficietiancy Act.
For 3 months the GOP knew that a CR and DC are not negotiable!!!!
Paul Mc says
No, the Democrats did not want any input.
Second, the GOP has the ability to halt the funding as they are currently in control of the house.
I suggest you actually read the anti-deficiency act. When federal agencies lack specifically appropriated funding, they must cease functions, unless there is a law authorizing them to continue or it is an emergency situation.
For 3 months the Democrats knew they should be negotiating yet have refused.
Cdev says
Yes Congress failed to appropraite money and to attempt to do so until a week ago!!!!
Paul Mc says
Good, we are agreed, you blame the Democrats as well!
Bud says
A million and a half more Americans voted Democrat than Republican in House races. The only reason the GOP continues to have a majority is because of district gerrymandering. And they still lost seats in both houses.Don’t be so sure that more Americans won’t wake up to this foolishness. The people on the Eastern Shore are among the one’s in this state that will benefit the most from The ACA, increases to minimum wage, etc. Once they figure that out, Harris and his ilk will be gone.
Paul Mc says
“A million and a half more Americans voted Democrat than Republican in House races.” – Yet, I believe, correct me if I am wrong, the GOP has the majority of the seats in the House.
“The only reason the GOP continues to have a majority is because of district gerrymandering.” – Such as the gerrymandering which takes place in Maryland and in Illinois? That Gerrymandering? Lol.
“And they still lost seats in both houses.” – yes, this past election they did. However, the one prior, the won in both the House and the Senate.
“Don’t be so sure that more Americans won’t wake up to this foolishness.” – Foolishness on both (all) sides of the aisle.
“The people on the Eastern Shore are among the one’s in this state that will benefit the most from The ACA, increases to minimum wage, etc.” – Very highly debatable.
“Once they figure that out, Harris and his ilk will be gone.” – Maybe, however, gerrymandering may play a part in that as well.
Brianc says
So you are against gerrymandering? Do you not think it goes both ways?
Paul Mc says
I am absolutely against gerrymandering, on both side.

In this issue it is so unfathomably childish and simple to say the government was shut down “by the President”, I’m not even sure how to address my statements to a sitting member of Congress. It seems the only way to do so would as a parent to a toddler, with the understanding that the toddler would have no solid grasp of the matter.
The statement “by the President” is so misleading, your children should be ashamed of your existence.
I’m not sure what is worse, to pity you for believing your own demagoguery, or for not believing it and carrying forth with it anyway.
Amazed. says
I think the key word in the headline was “inappropriately”… the implication being that the administration attempts to cherry pick what will be the most painful to the public and thereby increase rancor toward the opposition. The same accusations were made during the furlough. I’m more concerned with the apparent lack of concern by Obama’s supporters that he has decided he is entitled to grant a delay for certain groups and not all… is “fair” just a weather term these days? I can only assume the large companies that approached him for these delays are heavy contributors to re-election campaigns (or will be now) and that sort of bribery is even more disturbing than the clear problems with the entire law to begin with. I suspect Obama could line up the entire population and repeatedly count off 1,2,3 and tell all the two’s they can have a delay but the rest of you can’t… and his supporters would applaud his keen intellect in such a choice. Bottom line still stands… it’s a plan from DC so it’s crap.
noble says
Yes, like the sequester, it’s politically important that the public see lines of people waiting at the airport and hungry children at the grocery store checkout. I can’t dispute that.
It’s astonishing however, that Mr. Harris sees these calculated maneuvers as “inappropriate”, while there’s no mention of the actions of a faction of his own party that are primarily responsible for upsetting the democratic apple cart to begin with. Both major parties share equal blame for this latest debacle, and for either one to attempt to lay blame on the other is the height of hypocrisy and insulting.
We are being governed by toddlers fighting over candy in the back seat of the car.
To All You Obama Buttlickers says
If not for the conservatives, the republicans would not even have control
of the house. Do any of you idiots think for a second that they should just bend over for Obama. The demtards haven’t passed a budget for 4 years. They shoved Obamacare down the people’s throat without ONE republican vote. The passed exemptions for themselves and special interests but expect the rest of us to take it in the ass on this.
This whole bill is a huge handout to special interest with Acorn & Planned Parenthood getting millions of dollars so sign up people on these exchanges. Over 90% of people currently have healthcare and these idiots had to go and uproot the entire system just to give free handouts to poor people. We already give them subsidies on just about everything else including welfare, ebt, wic, job training, tax credits, eic, obamphones, energy assistance and on and on. No matter how many handouts you give these people it is never enough. We pay over 40% of our entire earnings to the government and they are still $15 trillion in debt and the freeloaders are still bitching for more handouts.
How about some personal responsibility and let the freeloaders get rid of their $200 air jordans, $100 fake Louis Vitton Bags, $5000 rims on their used cars and let them buy their own damn insurance.
Cdev says
They passed a budget this year in APril. The senate GOP didn’t want to go to conference though!
BTW the exemption was the Grassley ammendment. He is a republican.
ACORN doesn’t exist anymore!!!!
Baller says
The budget passed in April was because Republicans forced them to pass one AFTER FOUR YEARS WITHOUT ONE.
Grassley sponsored the original amendment requiring lawmakers and staffers to enter the Obamacare exchanges, but he didn’t intend for them to lose the employer subsidy.
“It is frustrating, but it’s most frustrating because if they had let those of us who knew anything about health care draft this amendment, we wouldn’t have this controversy,” Grassley said.
United Labor Unions (ULU) Local 100 in New Orleans, which is run by ACORN founder Wade Rathke, announced on its Facebook page that it’s gearing up “to do mass enrollment and help navigate people into the marketplaces in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas under the Affordable Care Act!”
Before his calamitous 38-year tenure as ACORN chief organizer ended in his expulsion from the group in 2008, Rathke covered up a million-dollar embezzlement involving the nonprofit’s pension funds. He presided over massive campaigns involving identity fraud in furtherance of voter fraud. (ACORN even knowingly hired felons convicted of identity theft to work on voter registration drives, giving them custody of sensitive voter information.)
Because says
I guess you missed the part where ACORN does not exist anymore.
Paul Mc says
There are still ACORN entities in existence. According to one article, nearly 200 of such entities are still operating. To claim anything else is either an uninformed statement or an outright lie.
Cdev says

Paul Mc says

“174 acorn”
Common Sense says
@Cdev even Wikipedia cites what happened to the defunct ACORN and how chapters and remnants have risen like Phoenix’ from the ashes.
Cdev says
That is not an article it is simply a list. It alleges that since someone worked with ACORN if they work with another group the new group must be ACORN. It would be like me saying that since David Duke was in the KKK and he was a republican candidate that the republican party is the KKK. Or since Arnold was a Communist and than a republican Republicans are Communist. It is a false eqivalency. It even admits that ACORN is defunct and does not exist anymore.
Paul Mc says
“That is not an article it is simply a list.” – There are articles associated and that link to the list.
“It alleges that since someone worked with ACORN if they work with another group the new group must be ACORN.” – No, the list states specifically that they are Still-Active ACORN Entities, ACORN Allies, and Rebranded ACORN Organizations. Reading is your friend.
“It would be like me saying that since David Duke was in the KKK and he was a republican candidate that the republican party is the KKK.” – Not at all. It would be more like saying that AFL teams are now members of the NFL.
“Or since Arnold was a Communist and than a republican Republicans are Communist.” – Again, wrong, but thanks for trying to use faulty logic.
“It is a false eqivalency. It even admits that ACORN is defunct and does not exist anymore.” – No, the list does not. However, a number of the articles (you know, the ones you ignored and claim that it is only a list), state that ACORN is claimed to be defunct, but in reality, are as shown on the list.
Lol, you are so fun to debate with.
Cdev says
I went to the link and it was a list on a blog……..THAT IS NOT AN ARTICLE!
Paul Mc says
I never provided a link. There are a number of articles on it. Read the article on the Blaze. Read the article on the Washington Examiner. You know, the ones I showed you in the beginning. Duh.
Cdev says
I know you never provided me a link. I had to use a google search to find it.
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2012/08/22/report-174-hidden-acorn-chapters-still-exist/
I typed in the terms you gave me and the first hit was a blaze article about the topic. The blaze article linked me to a blog that was just a list of groups. No support for anything was provided. All it had was a list on a blog!!!!
Paul Mc says
So, like I stated, there was an article. Look at the bottom of the article, it actually says, ‘Share this article’. If you read what I initially said, ‘According to one article, nearly 200 of such entities are still operating.’. Now, look at the Blaze article, it says, ‘The list of those 174 organizations is here (with the here being a link).’
Why are you arguing with me over this when you are so clearly wrong?
Also, if you read the article on either the Blaze or the examiner, you would see the support. “The connections between these groups and the old ACORN groups include: having the same physical location, sharing leadership or staff or having the same tax ID number. “For some of these groups, all they did was legally change their name. Nothing else changed. The corporate structure, leadership and staff are the same,” said Karen Groen Olea, Cause of Action’s chief counsel.”
Anything else you need pointed out specifically for you?
LOL! This is fun.
Common Sense says
@Cdev – I’ve never felt more embarrassed for you than today.
My advice – Put the Shovel Down and Back Away from the Hole.
Do it! And do it now!
Please for the love of God spare us all.
Cdev says
There is no documentation except the say so of a blogger!!!!! That is not an article!!!!!
Paul Mc says
Cdev,
You are going to argue that the article in Washington Examiner is not an article? That the article in the Blaze is not an article? And that the article in Cause of Action (and yes, aside from the list, there is also an article if you bothered to search) is not an article?
You do realize that an article is ‘A nonfictional literary composition that forms an independent part of a publication, as of a newspaper or magazine’, right?
As such, the articles in each of the three I stated, are, in fact, articles. Please, stop being so obtuse.
As for the documentation, debate it if you will, but, man, lol, horse…water…dying of thirst.
Have a good day.
Cdev says
Either way they [assed a budget after 4 yearsand the GOP didn’t want the regular order they so demanded! Had that budget been reconciled we would not have this shut down!!! As I said the GOP would have some leverage if the House had done it’s job! In the real world if you fail to do your job you get fired!!!!
Paul Mc says
It can be easily argued that the House is doing its job and the Senate is failing to do its job. The House has presented how many discuss the budget that the Senate has rejected?
Cdev says
zero because a CR is not a budget!
Paul Mc says
You failed to respond to my question. I said to discuss the budget. The Senate has rejected quite a few of them.
If you want, I can ask the same question about CRs.
Cdev says
Which budget has the Senate rejected?
Cdev says
If he didn’t intend for them to lose the employer subsudy he should have written a better law. Obama actually attempted to fix that with the exemption…..you know the one the GOP tried to remove on the CR!!!!!!
Mike Welsh says
…..He should have written a better law.
Absolutely. And the Congress should have passed a better law! That’s why there are so many exemptions, it is not a good law. Written in haste and passed by a partisan vote. The goals of the ACA are good. The mechanics and cost of the law are bad. For the ACA to remain a viable program it will require a major overhaul.
Common Sense says
@Mike Welsh
Oh why did you go an write logically and thoughtfully on ACA again?
Your kind of common sense gives CDEV the fits and starts.
Cdev says
Mike one can say it needs fixing but attatching to a temporary CR is not the forum to fix it!
Five Iron says
Please cite one submitted budget from the Republicans since Obamacare was in place that does not “defund” Obamacare (hence all the clean CR’s). I am sure if the Dem’s shut down the govt to give a lesson to Bush on his tax cuts, all hell would have broken loose from the conservative side, especially if they attempted to overturn it 44 times unsuccessfully. Insanity is the act of repeating the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. This is Boehner’s shutdown, own it. 0 for 44, sit on the bench until you get organized.

The President is thankful for the government shutdown. It’s quite apparent, otherwise he would have accepted the CR with a delay of part of ACA implementation for a year.
It was more important to the President to gin up political drama to distract people from his failures in foreign policy and the US economy.
Cdev says
Why accept a delay in a law that it seems the majority of people are in favor of. Most people did not support the tactic of attaching this to a CR. Even People who hate the ACA did not support it.
