From the Harford County Sheriff’s Office:
On Saturday, September 28, 2013 at approximately 4:20 pm Officers of the Havre de Grace Police Department responded to the 700 block of Erie Street, for a Fight in Progress and discovered a male suspect who was possibly armed and holding someone against their will. The Harford County Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) and the Special Response Team (SRT) were called to assist. The suspect has been identified as Austin Francis Jones, age 34 of Havre de Grace, MD.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Jones had barricaded himself in a room of the apartment and was armed with a firearm. Members of CNT were able to make contact with Jones and engage him in a dialogue and successfully negotiate the release of a hostage.
As deputies were negotiating with the suspect for his surrender, the Special Response Team was prepared to make entry. Deputies on the scene witnessed the suspect make an overt gesture with a black object toward the responding officers. He was subsequently shot by a member of the SRT unit. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Initial information provided to officers indicated that the suspect had a protective order against him stemming from an earlier incident with a female who resided at the location. The deputy who fired his weapon is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation; his identity is not being released. No further information is available at this time. The follow-up investigation by Harford County Sheriff’s Detectives is continuing.

The douche got what he had coming, I am sure society will rear it’s ugly head that another criminal got shot ‘by da poh-leese’, but the fact is, he held someone against their will. Possibly could have killed / injured her? Hell, he even had a history of it… what would have needed to happen for all of the “experts” to agree that this was a good thing to get another criminal off the streets? A dead hostage?

Unless you are, have been, or currently a police officer, don’t throw stones. You were not there at the time and had to make a quick decision. These men and women are highly trained professionals, their actions will be justified. “a dark object pointed through a window at the officers”, would you wait and ask the perp “sir, excuse me , do you have a gun or just pointing a finger? I think not.
What is troublesome is that the “quick decision” seems to lately entail shoot to kill by Harford County law enforcement.

The police did their job. There was NO out to get Austin. He was acting in a hostile manner and needed to be brought under control. This is not the first time he has been in confrontation with the police. One on one, Austin was a good guy and could have a good conversation. BUT when he got into the Thug life, he was a different person. So all these people who say that Austin was murdered need to step back and look at the situation. He brought this on himself and the police had to react.

I don’t really want to pass judgement without knowing exactly what happened. Nowhere in this article does it indicate what the “black object” ended up being or if there even was a black object. I would say Mr. Jones list of charges both past and present is 3 pages long and includes a history of both domestic violence and a cornicopia of various criminal charges including violent crimes. Seems to me some years ago a thoughtful Judge somewhere ought to have put this guy in jail and left him there. Why are people like this left wandering around to prey on the rest of us?

Thankfully, no one else was injured, no children are dead, and the officer who fired that beautiful shot did not have to be presented to his family in a body bag.
