Harford Community College hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for Darlington Hall, the College’s new center for Nursing and Allied Health Professions, on August 27.
HCC Board of Trustees Chair Dr. James Valdes and Brenda Morrison, Vice President of Marketing, Development and Community Relations, welcomed guests. HCC President Dr. Dennis Golladay gave a synopsis of the project, and Dr. Annette Haggray, Vice President for Academic Affairs, provided an overview of the facility. Laura Preston, Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Professions, and Dr. Zoann Parker, Associate Vice President for Continuing Education and Training, discussed the many programs that will benefit from the new facility.
For the first time ever, academic and continuing education health care programming will be offered in one building. The new 52,000 square foot three-story, state-of-the-art facility was designed with high-tech classrooms, laboratories, modeling and simulation labs, and informal study and social spaces. The building will be a central hub for students pursuing nursing and allied health degrees and certificates at the College, and will also serve Upper Chesapeake Health through ongoing professional development coursework including Medical Billing and Coding Program options. Considerable site work will include outdoor meeting space, new walkways and paths and includes the planting of over 50 new trees.
The State of Maryland will invest $10.5 million and Harford County will invest $7.4 million to construct, equip, and furnish Darlington Hall. Harford Community College is contributing land, human capital, equipment, and furnishings. These combined efforts are intended to positively impact the future quality of health care in our region.
The architectural firm of Hord Coplan Macht designed Darlington Hall to help provide for a more collaborative, team-based model of teaching in health care fields. Kinsley Construction is the general contractor hired to complete the construction of the project. The building is expected to be completed in time for the fall 2014 semester.
The College offers accredited health care education in a wide variety of majors and fields including EKG technician, electronic health record specialist, electroneurodiagnostic technician, dental assistant, histotechnology, medical assistant, medical office assistant, medical administrative assistant, medical billing and coding (in-demand for Remote Medical Coding Companies), medical transcriptionist, registered nurse, practical nursing, paramedic, physical therapy technology, patient care technology, pharmacy technology, and phlebotomy technician.
