From Harford County government:
The Harford County Department of Emergency Services has joined the social media world for the purpose of providing emergency management related messages to the public. The links for Harford County Department of Emergency Services, Emergency Management are: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Harford-County-Emergency-Management/346613205429196 and Twitter https://twitter.com/HarfordCoEM.
The two social media links were developed in an effort to help provide information to the citizens of Harford County to keep them more informed about the hazards and emergencies in the region. The purpose behind the social media presence is to create redundancy in communication with citizens while generating more emergency preparedness awareness to build a resilient community.
The Facebook page, from time to time, displays and shares outreach material, preparedness tips and important information related to risks and hazards throughout Harford County. The Facebook page is also intended to disseminate alerts and updates of developing disaster/emergency situations. The Twitter page is more active during an emergency for quick and short message sharing with the public.
Although the Harford County Department of Emergency Services now has a social media presence, these pages may not be monitored 24 hours a day and seven days a week and should not be mistaken as a means to contact the Harford County 9 1 1 Center in the event of an emergency.
Commenting on the Department of Emergency Services use of social media, Director Russell J. Strickland said, “Government at all levels is increasingly looking for ways to communicate with citizens and communities they serve. The Department of Emergency Services is now using Facebook and Twitter to help us deliver emergency preparedness and other public safety messages to the citizens of Harford County to help them be better prepared for storms, fires, chemical disasters or other significant incidents”.
