A 65-year-old man died Monday afternoon of an apparently intentional self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered at a Hickory gun range, police said.
The man, who was not immediately identified pending notification of his next of kin, suffered the wound after 3:30 p.m. at the Horst and McCann gun range on the 2100 block of North Fountain Green Road. He was transported from the scene in critical condition but later died from his injuries, according to Harford County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Edward Hopkins.
Hopkins said the incident was believed to be a suicide, not an accidental shooting.
Hee Haw says
So sorry for this mans family. Now I will go to the dark side and say his age fits my ex husbands.
RetiredAWhile says
God damn, how many times have you been married and what are you doing to these old geezers to make them commit suicide?
I know says
I know the man’s family, it’s a very sad day for everyone involved.
the truth says
What an ass hole for doing this at someones business!! Do it in your own damn back yard you coward!!
the truth says
What an ass hole for doing this at someones business!! Do it in your own damn back yard you coward!!
the lie says
Would it have been better in a motel room?
Luther Lingus says
agree completely – there are kids there
why would someone want anyone to be a witness of this action and then have to deal with the anguish and expense of cleaning up the mess
next the demtards will want to outlaw gun ranges to avoid suicides and we won’t have any place to take target practice
sad says
Obamacare in action.
I know says
I kind of hope this happens to the truth’s family just so I can call their family member an asshole.
Mr Wickwire says
Hey $ackasses this is a human what caused him to do this will never be known but dont sit here and talk #hit about him. Life sucks sometimes, do I agree with suicide- NO but mental health issues need to be addressed yet they will not. Thoughts and prayers with the family of this victim in this incident.
republican says
How many people just want to have someone say, “How are you doing?” and really mean it. Too many times, “friends” and other people see the signs, but don’t take a minute to really ask the question. I feel for his family. No one needs to commit suicide and think that life is not worth living? When is the last time someone asked the question or just turned the other way. We have all become so callous and find outlets to express our feelings and sometimes it comes across as sarcastic. Doesn’t mean everyone is uncaring, but there is a time and a place.
Todd Holden says
just reading over the ‘anonymous comments’…bears out my feelings about ‘comments’…it’s a sad thing, reading the ‘news’ herein the Dagger…it’s sad because any one of us could have known this fella, and said just the right thing to him to have prevented a lonely, desperate act….
Kharn says
Unfortunately, suicides are a sad fact of life for gun ranges. Most require you either bring your own gun, or a friend, before you’re allowed to rent a firearm.
Fed up says
It is unimaginable to most of us how desperate a person must feel to do this. Thoughts and prayers to the family, and to the folks at the range who had to deal with the aftermath. I am there often and nearly went with my son yesterday – very, very sad.
No More says
You should have been there. It would have been a good lesson for your son about what guns are really for.
Killing people.
Bakersbabe says
What a terrible thing to say!!! You are one sadistic soul to wish that on anyone, much less a child. No one will ever know just what kind of heartache led this person to take his own life. I just cannot imagine.
No More says
A child handling a gun should have full awareness of what destructive potential they are holding and the consequences of intentional or unintentional usage thereof.
The only terrible thing would be to deny them education in the proper usage and the catastrophe of misuse.
We don’t need another generation of sheltered kids brought up with wrong notions about firearms based on hollywood and instant respawn video games.
Teach them the right way or keep them away from the guns.
Kharn says
Consequences and potential injury is an important part of firearms training, but your statement was out of line.
Fed up says
No more – you are sick. Get help now before we read about your demise here or in some rag paper.
Luther Lingus says
Why don’t you stand out in the middle of I95 so you can teach your kids the dangers of automobile safety!
At least then we would not have to respond to your dumbass comments.
No More says
Are you advocating that I commit suicide?
There are enough bad drivers giving good examples already.
Just slow down the next time you pass a mangled car and say hey kids look at that. That’s what happens when you text and drive.
mvphkr says
Very sad news…condolences to the friends and family of the deceased…
Becky says
Did he rent a gun? Can you rent guns at these places?
Kharn says
I have not seen an indication either way on if the deceased rented one or not.
You can rent firearms at H&M for use on their range.
Hank says
Most gun ranges I’ve been to allow you to rent guns there. It’s a good way to check out a particular model you’re thinking of buying before dropping a bunch of money on it.
Harford Resident says
But do you need a license to do so?
Kharn says
You need to sign a waiver stating you are not a prohibited person and the store will hold your ID so you can’t run out the door with it, but a background check (and after 1 Oct, a “handgun qualification license”) is not required until you want to purchase the firearm or rent it from a store that would let you take it off the property during the rental period (I have never heard of a gun store with such a policy, but that is MD law).
Social Disorganization says
Sad News; however, be thankful that is was not a forced suicide with multiple casualties.
Unsafe Range says
I am an avid shooter and DO NOT GO TO THIS RANGE. I have seen bullets ricochet back and hit shooters, Drunk people being allowed range time, HIGHLY INTOXICATED people being allowed to rent guns, improper ventilation in the range, and overall gouging of people who really want to learn basic firearm safety. I have seen people bring jammed firearms off the range and into the lobby’ then watched as the “range officer” attempted to clear the stuck round whilst the barrel being pointed at a person in the lobby. This range needs to be bulldozed. I prefer to go to a range like FreeState in the White Marsh Area which has strict rules, adequate ventilation and is owned by former police officers. Again I am in no way “anti Gun” But I am very much for safety. The range in Hickory has a horrendous safety record.
Kharn says
H&M is expensive and the staff a tad inexperienced. When I was a frequent customer, I’d go at lunchtime during the week so I usually had the range to myself. The ventilation system policy change (from no lead base ammo, to allowing lead base ammo, as soon as Freestate opened up “because I gotta eat”) was a bit disconcerting.
Bang Bang says
“because I gotta shoot”
Luther Lingus says
Spoken from a friend of the owners of FreeState Gun Range.
I have been to H&M many times and never witnessed anything like what you claim.
Their policy on ammo sucks as you must shoot all of the ammo you purchase from them while onsite – I will give you a point for that.
No More says
I’ve seen similar questionable things at every range I’ve been to, both indoor and outdoor.
There are stupid people everywhere.
Freestate is one of the better ones but stupid still has a way of sneaking through the cracks thus the pictures of banned people now adorning the walls.
Nutswinger says
Wow dude, sounds like you got a personal problem with H&M.
Interesting you find it necessary to mention another gun range is owned by I quote, “former” police officers, oh , man, that is so important to know, or care.
If you are such an avid shooter you should know fragments from a ricochet can come back at any range.
I’m not a fan of any indoor range but to say one needs bulldozed is a little extreme isn’t it? Considering we live in a state that is anti gun you would think you wouldn’t want to tear down what’s left. LOL
Making allegations about drunk people is hilarious too, how did you know? Did you have a breathalyzer to confirm your suspicion?
Put your energy into Pro 2a organizations.
unsafe range says
I am T.A.M and T.I.P. Certified, have run several establishments that serve alcohol. The “highly intoxicated persons” I witnessed at the range were also happy to let me know that they had been drinking. I am not “a friend” of any range owner or outfit. There are very few left in the area. Having one that is unsafe gives a liberal nut-jobs such as your self more “ammo” for their anti gun smear campaign. Pun intended.
i am not smart says
Flim flam certified? Oh wow dude, you are so god damn special.
Dawn Wooldridge says
It was very scary, my sons walked in to the shop right after he did it. We were there when all the first responders showed up. Still hard to understand why he did that and he did it in the lobby not the actual range….smh
TheSpoiler says
Wait til the new gun laws kick in. No more suicide by gun or violent crimes by gun.
Ruger says
You think criminals are going to obey the new gun laws, you must be a special kind of stupid. Criminals who want a gun will have easier access to buy any type of firearm they want. They don’t want the paper trail to be tied to them if they use that firearm to hurt or kill someone. These gun laws hurt honest upstanding citizens who purchase firearms for either their collection, personal protection or just want to enjoy a new hobby.
kbsquared says
has the persons name been released yet?
Bang Bang says
ventilated vinny
Skeet Shooter says
I have had horrible experiences with Horst and McCann. Expensive, Disorganized, Poor Customer Service, and unforunately, at least to me, Michael Horst was a bit rude and unprofessional.

I just found out Saturday 11/2/13 that this gentleman had committed suicide. This gentleman was my brother. I have been estranged from the family for 10 years, but I can tell you this….He was one of the finest men I have ever known.
