A Harford County Sheriff’s Office deputy was seriously injured in a crash which occurred on Route 40 at Route 22 Monday morning, the agency said.
According to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Edward Hopkins, at approximately 5:15 a.m. Deputy First Class Chris Allen was traveling eastbound on Route 40 at the Route 22 spur in Aberdeen in a marked Ford Crown Victoria patrol car. Amid heavy rains at the time, Hopkins said a tractor-trailer pulled out of WaWa across Route 40 in an attempt to make a left into the westbound lanes. Allen’s car struck the left rear portion of the trailer.
Allen, a 13-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was transported by the Aberdeen Fire Department to Johns Hopkins Bayview; he was treated for his injuries and had been released from care by Monday afternoon. The driver of the tractor-trailer, George Lutes of Little Egg Harbor, N.J. was not injured, Hopkins said. The crash remains under investigation.
Allen’s wife, Yvette Allen, was killed in a December crash on the off-ramp of Interstate 95 at Route 22 in Aberdeen. According to Maryland State Police, Allen’s Ford Expedition SUV left the off-ramp and entered the shoulder of the highway, striking the rear of a tractor-trailer. She left behind five sons, according to an online obituary.
