Harford Commission on Disabilities Seeks Student Representative; Opportunity to Develop Leadership Skills and Influence Decisions Impacting Youth with Disabilities

The Harford County Commission on Disabilities is seeking a high school student with a disability who is interested in serving as the Commission’s student representative for the 2013/2014 school year.

The Harford County Commission on Disabilities was established in 1995 to serve as the voice of the disability community in Harford County. Serving on the Commission provides an opportunity to develop leadership skills and to offer input on issues important to youth with disabilities.

Additionally, the student representative will learn about laws and regulations pertaining to the disabled and will help coordinate and attend special events. This is a wonderful opportunity not only to impact others and raise awareness, but to enhance the individual’s own personal and professional growth.

Applications to serve as the Commission’s student representative are due July 30, 2013.

“The student representative for the coming school year will follow in a long line of extraordinary young people,” said Commission Chairperson Marc Weinstein. “Our most recent student representative, Matthew Combs, is a June 2013 high school graduate and was a great contributing member of the Commission on Disabilities. Matthew and our other student representatives, who moved on from high school to higher education, training, and the work world, bring their own perspective to the Commission’s discussions of issues relating to Harford County citizens with disabilities, and remind us to pay attention to those issues impacting our younger citizens.”

Nominated by the County Executive and approved by the County Council, the 16 members of the Commission work to ensure that people with disabilities are afforded the same rights, services, and opportunities as people without disabilities. The Commission meets at 5:00 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month at the historic Bel Air Colored High School, 205 Hays Street, Bel Air.
