From Del. Kathy Szeliga:
Are you ready for July 1st?
– gas tax goes UP
– tolls increase (again)
– the novel new RAIN TAX
These new taxes and fees will pick the pockets of Maryland taxpayers. Citizens across our state will agree with us, Maryland simply MUST do better. These tax and spend policies hurt Marylanders.
In O’Malley’s seven-year reign in Annapolis, he and his buddies have raised taxes and fees each and every year. What have they done with the 47+ new taxes and fees they have imposed on us? Click Here for List of Taxes, Tolls, and Fees. They continue to grow government and increase spending by more than $1 billion annually. And now we are seeing where this government largess has gotten us – corrupt prisons and wasteful spending in our school systems. You and I know that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
As you know, I was recently elected into leadership in the Maryland House of Delegates. Our new Minority Leader is Nic Kipke from Anne Arundel County, and I am the Minority Whip in our Republican House Caucus. Nic and I have rolled up our sleeves and started working on creative new ways to get our message out to the public. We’ve already had success in exposing the reprehensible state of the Baltimore City Detention Center where contraband cell phones and drugs are plentiful and four prison guards are pregnant by a prisoner who is an infamous gang leader- who I think is running the place! We also brought attention to the federal audit of Baltimore City and Prince George’s County’s public schools revealing waste, fraud and abuse; $222 for a pencil sharpener, engraved watches in velvet pouches for 145 principals, $99 fried chicken dinners, and much more. It’s shameful. We have only just begun to expose the corruption in Annapolis.
We must turn up the heat on O’Malley, Mike Miller and Mike Busch. I will not allow this arrogant monopoly in Annapolis to run our great state into the ground without a fight. That’s why I ran for Whip in the House and that’s why I need your help.
Elections are expensive. Redistricting has brought us 47 new legislative districts in next year’s election. As you can imagine, the Democrats in Annapolis have skillfully redrawn the districts to try to get more liberals to Annapolis and marginalize the moderates and conservatives. We will have a tough time bringing back all 43 Republicans to the House of Delegates. Leader Nic Kipke and I are working with Congressman Andy Harris and our new leadership team to identify and target seats where the tax and spend liberal policies are not popular. Your help is vital in our efforts.
Where can we win? We can win in districts where O’Malley’s 47+ new taxes and fees are hated, such as districts where taking away the rights of lawful gun owners in wildly unpopular and where taxing the rain is a ridiculous idea. Did you know that when O’Malley took office it cost drivers $23 to title their vehicles and it now costs us $100? A trip through the Ft. McHenry tunnel used to be $4 round trip, soon to be $8! During these historically tough economic times, the tax burden from Annapolis is crushing family budgets. Now more than ever, we have an opportunity to show voters that there is a better way.
Our Founding Fathers knew that checks and balances are important. A two party system works best because there is consistent accountability and skeptics from both sides watching out for any abuse of power. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent, we all agree that an active and productive minority party is important. I’m proud to be able to play a part in that system and provide a watchful eye for taxpayers and citizens across our state. I hope you will partner with me in this effort because I cannot do it without your help.
What can you do?
Please join me for breakfast on June 26th in Bel Air. I’ll bring you the latest update on the business and political climate in our state, including an overview of the new legislative districts created in redistricting. The invitation is below and also HERE

MARYLAND IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR – I HOPE YOU CAN HELP!

Yes dear. Now go sit in the lap of your buddy Andy Harris. You lost the referendum on Gay Marriage and your useless plutocrat was defeated in the general election. You are dinosaurs… you know the kind… they lived thousands of years ago alongside Adam and Eve. The only thing that motivates you is hate and defiance… even by moderate standards.
B says
hate/ defiance/ racist, blah, blah
Way to stick to the talking points of the liberal elitist.
Did you ever notice how you project your own feelings onto others? Pretty obvious in one angry post after another. Maybe sleeping instead of late night blogging would help.
ALEX R says
Because,
I am quite happy to hear you actually believe there was an Adam and an Eve. You are not far from the Kingdom of Heaven.
Because says
Sarcasm… Lost mostly on dull witted people who imagine it is somehow gospel.
Keesha Jackson says
So, Because, are the gas taxes Not going up? Are the tolls Not increasing? Did they cancel the rain tax? Help me out here because it seems like every time I turn around a new tax or fee is being added or an existing one is being increased. Can you maybe give me a list of those that have been eliminated or reduced? Had I been alive then I would perhaps been a JFK Democrat or maybe a Truman Democrat but these people are out of control and they are selling the future of our children and grandchildren to further their personal political careers today.
Tired of extremes says
Both sides are doing it regardless of all their talk.
We the people are being ground under their collective thumbs.
Tired of extremes says
The irony of your post is apparently lost on yourself.
Tired of extremes says
Because I said so.
Dr. Unruh says
The hateful comments of the first poster is one reason why I never liked liberals. They are nasty people.
Tired of extremes says
your generalizations are why I don’t like generalizations
Because (presumably Porter) is no different than any extremist Republican in that he is quick to call the other side out with generalizations, much as you have done, for the apparent gain of his side.
Have we not had enough of the two sided party system that breeds contempt, arrogance, generalizations, extremism, division, stone walling, and just plain boorish behaviours?
Are we not better than all of this as a nation and people or are we doomed to further intra-national division and subsequent degradation of what we hold dear?
May you all get what you deserve, and it is not going to be pretty.

If there was no demand there would be no supply. Before you cast aspersions on other people’s character and intentions – use a little introspection (Rare around here) to determine what your motives are before posting a snarky provocative and baseless comment that is personally directed. And when did my views become extreme? Is it through the filter of people at the other end of the bell curve?
more of the same from both sides says
case in point
Because says
And you are probably the poster child for people that find your category of people also offensive and objectionable.
more of the same from both sides says
touched a nerve?
Soul Crusher says
Please, stop touching his nerve……
Joe says
I can’t stand the sarcastic, negative tone in this and other politico postings…so done with it all.
Tired of extremes says
“arrogant monopoly in Annapolis” – and you would readily replace that with your own arrogant monopoly.
I am no longer content to trade one arrogant party for another.
To the ashes with both sides.
pizzle says
I look forward to the Republic rising again. It’s long overdue. Both parties (which are really the same) need a wake-up call, and the alarm clock is about to go off…..that is, if we can break ourselves away from “America’s Got Talent” and professional sporting events to actually notice what the hell is going on around us…..
On second thought, it seems that we’re screwed.
