From Harford County government:
Marylee Gorman of Harford County Governments Department of Procurement has been chosen for the Green Star Award for the 3rd Quarter for organizing a Green Expo for county employees.
As a kick off to the County’s new Recycled Product Policy, Ms. Gorman organized a Green Products Expo with Staples. The Expo highlighted several vendors that offer green office supplies such as white out, sticky tabs, refillable dry erase markers, recycled file folders, and calculators. County employees enjoyed playing fun games while learning about the recycled product options available from Staples.
Attendees were asked to guess the recycled content of four different pieces of paper, with recycled content of 0%, 30%, 80%, and 100%. This game debunked the idea that recycled paper is a lower quality than non-recycled when no one could correctly identify the differences. The first 75 people received a free 30% recycled ream of paper to use in their office to demonstrate that there is not a difference in quality when recycled paper is used. Since the Green Expo last October the amount of products purchased with recycled content has increased by 6%.
The winning selection was voted on by the members of the Green Team. The selection process consisted of a review of all Green Stars awarded between October and December of 2012, to identify the top Green Star award. Ms. Gorman received a “Green Globe” from Erin Ferriter, Ph.D., Green Team Chair on Monday February 25, 2013 for being selected as Green Star of the Quarter.
In 2008, County Executive David R. Craig formed the Energy Management Steering Committee, otherwise known as the Green Team, as one of his Environmental Initiatives. The goal of the Green Team is to guide energy and resource efficiency practices within the County. To foster a culture of sustainability, in June 2010 the Green Team created the Green Star Program to recognize actions by county employees that demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship, promote energy efficiency and resource management.
