From Harford County Public Schools:
Due to the anticipated snow forecasted for this afternoon, Harford County Public Schools will dismiss two hours early today, Friday, January 25. No afternoon pre-k or preschool services. All afternoon/evening activities are cancelled.
We will evaluate the conditions tomorrow morning and a decision will be made regarding weekend activities by 5:00 a.m. on Saturday and communicated through our website www.hcps.org as well as media outlets.

Do these kids ever go to school? They had off half the week already. When I went to school in the 70’s , it was from the day after Labor Day until the Friday after Memorial Day. We never closed early for anything and we sure as heck didn’t get off school for two inches of snow, a high wind, or some minor flooding. And to think everyone had rear wheel drive back then and we survived. What a bunch of babies!
Really says
Snowman…you and many others are capable of traversing in adverse weather conditions. Remember one thing…”Monday morning quarterbacking” is alive and well. The first child that becomes injured (God forbid) because of the weather…guess what??? the decision makers get to carry the blame, not you. When you decide to wear the hat, you can make the calls. Oh…bye the way, I’m sure you went to school uphills both both ways “in the 70’s”.
Snowman says
Oh just stop. What? You think people making decisions in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s didn’t make good decisions. Get real. All over the mid-west and in New England, kids go to school everyday, all winter, in the snow and while its snowing. That doesn’t make their leaders poor leaders. People in this area have just become a bunch of pansies. Even in Western MD, they go to school in the snow. They just deal with it!!!! The buses just chain up, and off they go.
Here is a newsflash for you, there are LESS highway fatalities when its snowing because vehicles are moving much slower. When has any student in Harford County ever died going to school in the snow? Never. And no, the decisions makers don’t carry any blame. People are responsible for their own actions. Again, pansies always wanting to blame someone else. And by the way, you must have missed a lot of school with “uphills”. No such word. If the bus couldn’t make it up the hill, we walked to the bottom of the hill to meet it.

You lived in a different social mindset. Today; self righteous mouth breathing feet stompers complain about everything they don’t like, and feel you shouldn’t do stuff because they don’t like it, etc. etc. etc.

actually it ended up being a good call. snow came before elementary schools got out. the neighborhoods and back roads became slippery immediately. unfortunately in order to get the elementary school home earlier – it starts with the high school at noon. all it would take is one accident where a child is injured and hcps would be getting grief for not letting the kids out earlier. and to answer snowman’s question – the students go 180 days a year! they start earlier and end later now!
No place for our kids says
One accident could equal 50 law suits from pissed off parents. Good call to error on the side of caution when other people’s kids are at risk… No matter how many snow days, in-service days, made up holidays (mlk, presidents, etc.) the kids go 180
Snowman says
It’s a pretty sad commentary on society if one accident equals 50 lawsuits, but so typical. I had a child involved in an incident of a similar nature who was not injured (actually no one was). I I guess some folks sued, we didn’t. We don’t live our lives that way, but I know some folks are always looking for a free hand out.

Snowman…Again you are right, uphills is not a word it is just part of a saying from the “50’s, 60’s, 70’s “(by the way, you forgot the “and” between 60’s and 70’s). “LESS highway fatalities”…again you are correct, so when I see a child waiting for the bus at Exit 77 A/B he or she is safe. Oh that’s right, the buses only service rural neighborhoods not the interstates. Please let me know what the statistics are for accidents in those areas that are untreated and slick (should keep you busy for a while). Before punching out I have one last question…you said, “If the bus couldn’t make it up the hill, we walked to the bottom of the hill to meet it”….so how did you get to school if the bus couldn’t make it up the hill? Just sayin’ (not a word, I know).
Snowman says
Not too bright? If you lived on a steep hill off of a main road as we did and the bus couldn’t get up the hill, you walked down the hill to the main road to meet the bus. Again, there has never been any child that died while walking to or be transported by a bus to a Harford County school in bad weather and you would be hard pressed to find any child in MD that has been killed walking to school or in a bus accident directly related to snow or ice. It is basic physics 101. When roads are covered with anything in this part of the state (Western MD is the exception), people drive about 20 mph. Two vehicles driving 20 mph and having a collision, with all the advancements in automotive safety are not going to be too severly hurt, much less killed. I know your type. If you had your way, kids would be off for “partly cloudy” day. It is all part of this dumbed down, soft, everyone gets a trophy, everyone is a winner sad society we have become. Schools should not be closing early for a two inch dusting that didn’t even happen until after school would have ended at the regular time. Look at all of the moms/dads/grand parents/ neighbors that have to juggle their afternoon to accomodate this non sense. So much lost productivity in the business community.
Really says
Snowman…Get educated, you state, “Two vehicles driving 20 mph and having a collision, with all the advancements in automotive safety are not going to be too severly (severely) hurt, much less killed.” Guess what, human physiology hasn’t made any advancements since the beginning of recorded time. With that said, when a vehicle is moving at 20 MPH and it comes to a sudden stop, so do the internal organs. The vehicle looks good but what about the brain or other internal organs of the occupant. In closing, “I know your type”, you are upset when inclement weather comes because you have to get up early to plow and treat the roads. Please don’t be upset because the community appreciates what you do in making the roads safer for our youth. I will expect a response when you return from your duties.
Snowman says
You are brain dead Really. Coming to a sudden stop at 20 mph does nothing to our internal organs. If it did, there would be no roller coasters, no bumper cars, no water flumes, etc, etc. I don’t plow roads and have nothing to do with transportation. As I do know someone that does work for the County, I will tell you that people that do plow roads love the snow. These folks don’t make a lot of money and they make most of their income in the winter through overtime. It’s that ovetime that these hard working folks pay for the extras in life. So please don’t insult the hard working people that clear the roads so that those of us that work like me can go to work. Hey, you stay in your house today because there is some ice on the ground. People with a life drive 70 miles to work and made it with no problems. Don’t go out, it’s dangerous for you.

How many children will be completely unsupervised, left to their own means, or at best supervised by a sibling on days off. How many count on the meals they receive from schools as their main meal of the day? With so many families out of work, working multiple jobs, or legitimately fearful of loosing the thread of employment that keeps them out of foreclosure it’s a real concern. It’s not just “slacker” parents that are looking for free babysitting. It’s a bit righteous to think that the only way to be negligent or get hurt on a snow day is in a vehicular collision.
