A man drowned in the Susquehanna River in Havre de Grace Saturday afternoon after police said he accidentally fell into the frigid waters.
John Thomas Duncan, 58, of no fixed address died after a friend and a nearby witness pulled him from the water off the 600 block of Water Street, according to Havre de Grace Police Department spokesman PFC Jeffrey Gilpin.
According to police, Duncan and his friend, Guy McGee, 44, of Elkton, were present at a waterside bulkhead just before 5 p.m. Saturday. McGee told police he turned away for a moment, and when he turned back, Duncan had fallen into the water. Gilpin said the water temperature at the time was an estimated 39 degrees.
McGee dove into the water after Duncan, and began shouting for help, police said. A witness at a nearby marina heard him, and helped McGee pull Duncan from the water. Police arriving on scene began CPR, and both men were transported to Harford Memorial, where Duncan was pronounced dead.
Gilpin said alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident, but foul play is not suspected.
